Sims 4 Crashes During Saving

Ever since the update on April 29th, my game has been crashing on save. I am able to load the game and play for a bit before saving and then it crashes. My computer and drivers are up to date, I've tried repairing all of my game files, and I have no mods or cc installed. Please help!! I've included my dxdiag.

  • gypsyfolife  Does this happen with a new save as well?  Please test, for comparison's sake, and let me know.  Please also let me know whether OneDrive is running on this computer, even if you never use it.

If the new save is affected, please try again but with your computer offline.  You can sign into the EA App and put it in offline mode, then disable wifi and/or disconnect the ethernet cable before pressing Play.

It happens with new and old saves. I have tried playing offline as well and it still crashes.  There are OneDrive files on my pc but I don’t have the app.

  • gypsyfolife  Please test in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop.  When you launch the game, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you've moved but temporarily unread by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just start a new save, play for a bit, and see whether you can save your progress.

Your dxdiag does show that your graphics driver is a bit old.  I wouldn't expect this to cause problems saving specifically, but it's worth updating anyway.  You can use the newest driver Intel provides:

    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/149088/intel-core-i58265u-processor-6m-cache-up-to-3-90-ghz/downloads.html

Run the installer as an admin: right-click the download and select "Run as administrator."  Restart after installing and before trying to play.

If you get an error when trying to install this driver, try this workaround:

I updated my graphics driver and removed my save files to the desktop. I went in and started a completely new save, played for a bit, and when I attempted to save the game crashed again.

  • gypsyfolife  Please try in a new admin Windows account.  Make it local, as in, don't link it to your Microsoft account or any email address.  You'll be able to launch Sims 4 without reinstalling anything, but your saves and other user data won't be available.

If this doesn't help, let me know what antivirus you use and whether it's listing any recent actions that involve Sims 4.

If it DOES help, we can try to fix your main account.  Let me know whether the game is currently reading a folder inside OneDrive, as described here:

I created a new local user and started a new save. I’ve been playing for a while and it seems to be working, no crashing while trying to save.

I’ve located the file path and it says C:\users\12626\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Slot_00000036.save.

  • gypsyfolife  You can try copying your existing save files from the old Windows account to the new one.  Any files that you want to transfer can go in C:\Users\Public, which is accessible from all accounts.
