Sims 4 graphics really slow after downloading Horse Ranch HELP

Sims was working fine on my laptop before I downloaded the Horse Ranch expansion pack. Now it gets stuck on the loading screen then eventually get struck on the home screen. The theme music is still playing normally... I've tried uninstalling and redownloading, cleared all my saves and uninstalling and redownloading the EA app. How can I fix this please?

  • @Millamoo17  You can try playing in fullscreen mode with the in-game resolution set to match your laptop's screen: 2256x1504.  You can also try "windowed fullscreen" (i.e. Borderless) instead of standard fullscreen.

If that doesn't help, you can try setting your DPI scaling to 96 (100%) rather than 144 (150%) as it currently stands, but that will make everything on-screen look smaller.  It shouldn't be necessary to do this; it's just that Sims 4 doesn't always respond well to the combination of an unusual screen resolution and an altered DPI scaling.  It's a limitation of many older games.  Here's how to change DPI, and you can always change it back if you don't like the result.

  • @Millamoo17  As a test, please try playing in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, and when you launch the game, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you moved but temporarily not read by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just let me know whether you can get far enough to start a new save and play in live mode for a bit.

If that doesn't help, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

Thanks for your help. It wouldn't even load to the main screen where I could select a new start.

    I've attached the dxdiag

    Thanks!

@Millamoo17  Before doing anything else, please try to clear as much space as possible on your computer.  You currently only have 5.7 GB available, which is barely enough for Windows to maneuver properly.  I realize you're somewhat limited with only a 120 GB C drive, but delete what you can, for example installers or .zip files in the Downloads folder that you've already used.

For Sims 4 itself, try launching the game in windowed mode.  Go into Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4, open Options.ini, search for fullscreen , and set it to 0 (zero).

Thanks for that!! It seems to be working in the windowed mode just fine.

Does that mean I need to play it like that from now on?

    Thanks so much
