Sims 4 Launch and Playtime causes Internet Connection on PC to die completely.

Hi there!

I hadn't played in a little while and so bought some packs today to get back into it. Noticed that upon launch my internet connection went down. So restarted the router, unplug - wait 10 minutes - plug back in, as well as my computer. Internet seemed fixed until I opened up The Sims 4 again, when it immediately died for things like Youtube and Discord. So the entire rest of the computer.

It's worth noting that no other device in the house had any issues at all whilst The Sims is running, our wifi connection is 250MBPs and wired is around 800MBPs. So a good connection other wise.

I scrolled other forums and found similar issues. Here is the testing I have completed and fixes I've attempted so far.

- Restarting computer and modem: listed above
- Reinstalling EA app and subsequently the game and all DLC: No change
- Allowing The Sims 4 through Public and Private firewall in Windows Defender: No change
- Running both EA app and The Sims 4 executable as administrator: No change
- Setting The Sims 4 executable to run as administrator in the compatibility properties: The Sims 4 would not launch
- As the PC is on WiFi, I tried an ethernet cable: No change
- Mobile Data from my Mobile Hotspot: No change
- Launched The Sims with no other unnecessary executables running: No change
- A very old forum suggested removing legacy content but I did not have a legacy content folder so was unable to reproduce.

Further information, I run no Mods or CC, have no anti-virus installed. (Windows defender is advanced enough) and have no VPN installed.

I've never had this issue before, and though possible to play without any internet connection, it would be very nice to be able to utilise the internet whilst playing. If anybody is able to help that would be much appreciated :)

  • CatBuzzz  Does it help to put the EA App in offline mode?  If so, try keeping the App in online mode but disabling Online Social Features, in Options > Game Options > Other.  You could disable it while the App was still offline so as not to kill your internet again.

Hi there! Apologies I should have listed this. But I did disable the Online Social Features and run the EA App offline. With no change unfortunately :(

  • CatBuzzz  Please delete some temp files on your computer:

    • Click Windows key-R, and a run box will appear in the lower-left corner of the screen.
    • In the new window, type or copy & paste "%temp%" (without the quotes), and enter.
    • Now your Windows Explorer should have brought you to the C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Local\Temp folder.  Delete all files and folders inside.
    • If some files or folders can't be deleted, restart your computer (a real restart, not sleep/wake) and try again.

Additionally, before trying again to open the EA App, clean-uninstall it with Revo Uninstaller (the free version is fine).  Use the Intensive scanning method when asked.  Restart your computer and download a fresh copy of the App installer from here:

    https://www.ea.com/ea-app#downloads

Run it as an admin: right-click the download and select "Run as adminnistrator."  Then open Sims 4, while fully online, and see what happens.

I've repro-ed the steps above and unfortunately still have the same issue :( Thank you for trying to help!

  • CatBuzzz  Please run a couple of basic checks on your Windows system files:

    • Click Windows key-X
    • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator),” whichever option is offered
    • Inside the window that appears, copy and paste “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes, and enter
    • The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here
    • After it reaches 100%, click Windows key-X again
    • Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator)”
    • Inside the window, copy and paste “sfc /scannow” without quotes, and enter
    • Post the message you receive here

Restart your computer, click Windows key-i, select Update & Security, and click the box to check for updates.  If any install, restart again afterwards.

Please also clear the EA App's cache and repair the game afterwards.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at
windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline
repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.

Is the message! I'm just completing the other steps now :)

I completed the final steps, launched the game and still have the issue. Internet on the machine goes down, and then comes back when the game is closed!

  • CatBuzzz  Do you disable wifi when testing with the ethernet cable connected?  If not, please try it.

If that doesn't help, please try playing in a clean boot:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows-da2f9573-6eec-00ad-2f8a-a97a1807f3dd

The one service to leave enabled is the EABackgroundService, which the EA App needs in order to run.  Disable the rest as described.

When you reboot your computer, go through the Task Manager's background processes list shutting down any service that doesn't absolutely need to be running, for example anything from MSI Afterburner to RGB software might still be enabled.  If you accidentally kill a critical process and it doesn't restart on its own, just reboot your computer again.

Don't open anything other than Sims 4 and the EA App while testing, not even a browser window.

If this helps, you can selectively reenable services until you find the culprit, then either leave that disabled or (if it belongs to an app you want to keep using) let me know what it is so we can try to fix the underlying issue.

  • Hi there,

I completed the last step you sent over. Unfortunately with everything disabled it was still causing my internet to completely disconnect on launch when in a game.

I also updated my WiFi card drivers, disabled the wifi when trying through ethernet. I also reached out the EA customer support and the (very lovely) support officer on the other end tried a few things and we could not fix it. He's moved the ticket over to the concern team for feedback. But I'm unsure if they will pick the ticket up to help fix.
