Sims 4 won’t open

Hi, so here is the issue I am having. When I go to open the sims 4 (which I just updated) it gets loaded fine and then stuck on this page (picture included below) the music is still playing in the background and I can not close the app without ctrl+alt+delete and logging out of the user on my laptop. Surely I can’t be the only one having this issue and I would really love some advice on how to fix it since I recently bought this game and expansion packs and would like to be able to keep using them.

  • @julia_n_okiedoki  I've moved your post to the Sims 4 PC tech section.

Please remove your entire Sims 4 game folder from Documents\Electronic Arts; you can put it on your desktop.  Launch the game again, which will create a clean folder.  If you can start a new save, the problem is a corrupt file in your old game folder.  The most likely culprit is an outdated mod or cc item.  You can test your mods and cc in the clean folder in batches; any batch that prevents the game from loading needs to be split and tested again until you find the problem file(s).  While testing, be sure to delete localthumbcache.package from your new game folder each time you quit.

Once your mods and cc are sorted out (or start here if you don't have any installed), you can move the contents of Saves and Tray from your old game folder to your new one.  Most of the rest of the files can be left behind.  Here's an explanation of everything in your game folder:

If TS4 won't load properly even with a completely clean game folder in place, please run a dxdiag and attach the results to a post here.

  • I had this EXACT same problem. It happens after the big 5GB update.

There is another update that Origin doesn't inform you about, it's an update that's about 1GB.

In your game library on Origin, right click The Sims and click "Update Game".

Wait for it to update and launch it again. It seems like it freezes up at first but it will go into the spinning logo after a little bit, and then to the main screen. 🙂

  • I waited for about 5-10 minutes and it was still stuck on the same screen even after I updated the game again ☹️

  • Hi, so I SUPER appreciate your trying to help, but can you maybe explain that again in simpler terms for me? I’m not at all tech savvy and had been hoping that this game would be a simple one I could play and enjoy but it’s just turned into a technology problem I have no way of fixing!

i did manage to find and delete the sims folder from Electronic arts section, but even after that the game still wouldn’t load and I don’t know how to do the rest of what you described.
Is it maybe an issue of not having enough space to launch the game or something?

@julia_n_okiedoki  Hopefully you haven't permanently deleted your Sims 4 folder, since it has your saves and builds in it.  Even if it's in the recycle bin, you can still get it back.  But for testing purposes, what matters is that it's no longer in Documents\Electronic Arts.

Since you can't launch the game even without that folder present, then we do need more information about your system.  The EA help article about running a dxdiag is very thorough, and you don't have to do any more than run the command, wait for it to finish, save the info, and attach it to a post here.  It will include a report about free storage, if you're wondering whether that's the issue, as well as information about a whole host of other potential problems.
