sims 4 won't launch, keeps crashing

hello! i've recently been having this issue launching the sims since the last patch update. the game will begin to launch, but before it ever loads to the main menu it crashes back to the ea app. for added context, i have ea downloaded on my pc and the sims 4 downloaded on an external hard drive. i have tried clearing cache, repairing the game and deleting and redownloading ea and nothing has worked.

don't really know what a dxdiag is but i've attached the file bc apparently it helps.

any suggestions would be appreciated :)

  • jollyemil  A dxdiag is a type of system report that lists some hardware and critical drivers, plus errors and a few other interesting details.  In your case though, it only says there's nothing obviously wrong with your laptop and that Sims 4 is crashing because it's crashing.

Your issue does sound like this one:

Crashes on Mainmenu | EA Forums - 12139111

So please remove your saves folder from Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 and see whether you can play.  If this helps, but you want to recover your save files, let me know.  And of course tell me if it doesn't help at all.

thank you for the advice! i would like to recover my save files--i was afraid this would be the only solution because i really don't want to lose them. however if this is the only way, of course i'm willing to try it. i've been trying to hold out until the next patch update so see if that changes anything so i don't have to risk my saves :(

  • jollyemil  Some players report that simply creating a new save allows them to add their old saves back and load them.  Make sure you're not replacing the new save—if asked what you want to do, choose "skip this file" and renumber the old save that's conflicting with the new one.

Other players have reported they needed to add back the mods and custom content they were using while playing the old save.  In particular, custom tattoos seem to be a culprit here.  So if having a new save present doesn't help by itself, try adding back your mods and cc, updated versions where necessary.

  • eeek i tried it and it worked! i even moved back the save file with my main/most played household and it looks to be working fine. only thing is the game seems to be slightly more laggy than it used to be, but hopefully that'll change once i start actually playing again. thank you so much for your help :)

jollyemil currently doing some testing on this.

Do you have any mermaids that have custom content tattoos ? It looks like those are causing issues.
