Sims 4 Won't Launch

I’ve been having trouble with The Sims 4 since around August 25th, and I’m really stuck. At first, the game would crash whenever I tried to place a lot, or if I managed to place one, it would get stuck on an endless loading screen when trying to exit. I did a 50/50 test with my mods, which seemed to help at first, but then the game just stopped launching completely.

Even after removing my mods, saves, and tray content, the game still won’t start. I’ve tried three separate game repairs, which took a whole day each, but the problem persists. When I try to launch the game, it doesn’t start at all; The Sims 4 shows up in the Task Manager under background processes, using less than 200 MB of memory with no CPU or disk activity.

On September 5, 2024, I deleted the Sims 4 folder from the Electronic Arts directory. A new folder was created with some files (Config override, Saves ReticulatedSplinesView, UserData.lock, and UserSetting), but the game still won’t launch and stays in the background processes. I’ve also restarted my PC, cleared the cache from the EA app, reinstalled the EA app, cleared temporary files, done a clean boot, and repaired the game multiple times. I also exempted Sims and the EA app from antivirus and checked for malware, but nothing seems to work.

On September 7, 2024, after taking a two-day break, I tried launching the game with a fresh folder, which worked initially, so when I got in to the main menu, I lowered the graphic settings to low meduim just in case that was the issue. I then closed the game and tried importing my saves, and the game launched successfully. However, when I tried adding my tray content, it took forever to load. I thought I might have downloaded a corrupt lot from the gallery, so I deleted the most recent builds and tried launching the game again, which worked. But when I tried launching again to make sure that it was the tray, and of course it didn't launch, I removed the whole tray folder and it launched, so I thought it must be the tray; so it seems like the tray content is the issue. launched again to make sure and it worked so I decided to try some cc and it gave me error to remove cc that may have been corrupted and I did, it launched but was stuck on "The Sims 4" main loading screen in which a white screen follows and the "this program is not responding" in which it asks me to quit or wait, waited and the notification came back. I tried again by removing the recently added cc/mods and got the same results as with the added cc/mods.

I removed everything and tried a fresh game. I got into cas, created a new sim, selected season, and then chose a lot, which was going fine until it started lagging and I got the same "the sims 4 is not responding; would you like to wait or exit?" I selected wait, and it was loading for over 5 minutes; it finally loaded and was super glitchy. It's glitching on Low Medium, and I normally play on High. I tried to travel as a test, and it went to the loading screen where I got the error message again, "The Sims 4 is not responding; would you like to wait or exit?". I’m really confused about what to do next since every solution seems to introduce new problems.

I’ve attached the dxdiag report for more details, along with screen shots of the error message at different points.

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, I totally forgot to close the case. It turns out my laptop is malfunctioning, and it has nothing to do with the game, as the game does indeed launch after like 30 minutes and then freeze, but this is due to my laptop and not the game. I have currently uninstalled sims and hoping to upgrade to a better laptop with a good graphics driver based on the sims recommendation.

I want to say thank you so much, You have been an absolute help to me, helping me with countless troubleshooting and patience for a tech newbie! The community truly appreciates you. Thank you!

  • @ICELATTEEEE  The most obvious issue here is that your laptop's graphics driver is from 2019.  The Sims 4 errors in your dxdiag could also be driver-related, although they aren't always.  So please install the newest driver available from Intel, dated September 3:

    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/195436/intel-core-i510210u-processor-6m-cache-up-to-4-20-ghz/downloads.html

Restart your computer after installing and before trying to play.

If that doesn't help, please let me know what antivirus you use and whether OneDrive is running on this computer, even if you never use it.

My bad, I'm not really a guru, so I was unfortunately unaware of the driver update. Thank you for that.

But I did the update, restarted, and it still didn't work. I also did another repair to see but still didn't launch (when I checked the folder it only loaded config override, save, and user info). In task manager, it's now using no more than 10 MB. For the antivirus, I'm using Windows security, and no onedrive is neither installed nor running.

@ICELATTEEEE  Please create a new admin Windows account and try playing there.  Make it local, as in, don't link it to your Microsoft account; you should instead be asked to answer some security questions.  You'll be able to (try to) launch Sims 4 without reinstalling anything, but your saves and other user data won't be available.  That's fine for the purposes of this test.

If this doesn't help, do you have a friend or family member with an EA account you could borrow?  It's worth testing just to make sure this isn't account-related.  The Sims 4 base game is free, so they wouldn't need to own it already, and the test would be valid even without your owned packs.

If that doesn't help either, please post a new dxdiag.

Ok so I created the local account and tried launching it, but was unsuccessful, so I checked the folder and it was the same 4 files as previously noted (Config override, Saves, UserData.lock, and UserSetting), I left it for around 10 minutes and nothing. I then moved on to the next suggestion and nothing else but the same 4 files. I then did a couple reboots, turned the PC off for about 7 hours, then tried launching again, and still nothing after 30 minutes; it just gets stuck in background processors. I also noticed that after updating the drive, I'm unable to adjust my brightness, neither with the hotkey nor the slider (it's not even in settings). Could the issue be my PC? not sure how, as I didn't do anything different before the game stopped launching.

    I attached the dxdiag.

@ICELATTEEEE  The inability to adjust brightness could be due to the newer driver, but the problem is that Acer itself doesn't offer a driver newer than the one you originally had.  What options do you see under Settings > System > Display?  You might be able to adjust things there.

Your newer dxdiag is also missing the usual Windows errors.  These errors do exist since they were in your original dxdiag, but for some reason this one couldn't read them.  That could be a random glitch, but please run a couple of checks on your system files anyway:

    • Hit Windows key-X
    • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator),” whichever option is offered
    • Inside the window that appears, copy and paste “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes, and enter
    • The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here
    • After it reaches 100%, hit Windows key-X again
    • Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator)”
    • Inside the window, copy and paste “sfc /scannow” without quotes, and enter
    • Post the message you receive here

Restart your computer, hit Windows key-i, select Update & Security, and click the box to check for updates.  If any install, restart again afterwards.

When I go under Settings > System > Display, it only shows 2 options on the brightness and colour settings, "Night Light" and "HDR" The usual brightness slider is nowhere to be found.

So I did both test and copied the information but forgot to save it in the sticky note (should have used notedpad), After I did the last step, the PC restarted and it got cleared. I tried my best to redo the steps but instead of errors or the corrupted file detected, I was getting "Successful."  I attached the file from the scans, the DISM was before the restart and the CBS is after, I'm unable to attach the CBS from before the restart as it is over the size limit. I hope it's ok.

@ICELATTEEEE  The DISM log is never necessary unless DISM itself fails.  (The normal message is "the restore operation completed successfully" or similar.)  The sfc log is only necessary if sfc "found corrupt files and was unable to repair some of them."  If you did see that message, let me know; if you're not sure, you can run sfc again to find out, since those corrupt files would still be present.  Both logs are impossibly long as well, so I'd rather avoid going through them unless warranted.

For the brightness, you can try going back to the Acer driver, but I'd like to know whether Sims 4 works now with the newer driver in place.

    PS C:\Users\willi> sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

After doing all of the steps, it still doesn't launch.

@ICELATTEEEE  What antivirus do you use, if any?  And at the moment, what happens when you try to launch Sims 4, as in, do you get a crash at the loading screen, or an error from the EA App, or something else?  A screenshot of any error message would be helpful.

Please also look for new errors in the Reliability Monitor.  Hit Windows key-R and enter "perfmon /rel" without quotes, and you'll see a chart of errors and updates with a column for each day.  Today is on the right.

Try again to open Sims 4, then look for an error that happened at exactly that time.  If you find one, double-click it to see more details, then copy that info and paste it into a reply here.  If you don't see a new error, check back in an hour or so—the Reliability Monitor doesn't always update right away.
