Sims4 game ignoring symlink and creating its own file when game opened

Hello,

My pc not having enough space anymore, i decided to move my sims 4 file to an external drive. My pc works on windows 10 btw.

I followed the instructions to create a symlink between the original file emplacement and where they actually are, and it seemed to work fine until i actually opened my game to test it : the game just ignore the symlink and create a new sims file everytime, no matter how many times i supress it. The sims files (as in the ones with the actual games, not the ones with the mod and saves) and all the origins files are also already on my external drive. Any idea why this happens and how to resolve it??

  • @caillou193  Which folder did you redirect to the external drive?  Please post a screenshot of the folder that contains the symbolic link, specifically after you've launched the game and it's created a new folder.  It would also be helpful to know which instructions you followed; you can just link a guide if you used one.

    Hello, i followed this intructions :
    https://crinrict.com/blog/2020/02/moving-windows-documents-folder-to-external-drive-via-symbolic-link.html
    and redirected them to a folder in my externel drive containing the direct files for the sims 4.
    I will post a picture of it when i have access to my computer, but if i click on the symlink file to open it it does open normally the real file. For the new file creating itself, it just appears in the electronic art file beside the symlink.

    @caillou193  Yes, please do post a screenshot or two, when you get the chance so I can see what's going on.  I'd specifically like to see one that also includes the new folder the game generates when you play.

    @caillou193

    If for any reason your external drive was temporarily unavailable when starting the game this will happen.

    Hello, after re installing origin i actually figured out the problem : for some reasons, if i didnt disconnect before closing origine, it didnt totally close it and that s why the symlink didnt work. Thank you very much for your help 🙂

  • Hi, I am having this same problem would you mind to explain this a bit more, i would really appreciate it.

    @Pebbles1815  What exactly is the issue?  Please post screenshots as well: one of the Command Prompt window showing the symlink command you used and the result (you can delete the current symlink to allow a new one to be created), and one of the new Sims 4 folder where you'd expect the symlink to be.

    The problem is i created a symbolic link, but when i start the game there is none of my cc, save etc It looks as if i never played sims. The game is ignoring the link i have created. When i close out the game and go to the folder the game is creating a new EA folder.

    @Pebbles1815  The problem is the "- Junction" on the end of the folder name.  Remove that so the folder's name is simply "The Sims 4" with no extra characters.
