The game wont launch on Steam Deck

I tried to play the game on my Steam Deck yesterday but it refused to launch. Not even the EA App seemed to load like it usually does. I changed nothing on my part - no custom proton settings or anything I left it just like Steam OS installed it. The game worked absolutely fine a few days/roughly a week ago.

This issue seems to affect multiple users:

  • This is a little technical but it did resolve it for me:

    1. Switch to Desktop Mode (Steam button -> Power -> Switch to Deskop)

    2. Download the EA App with Firefox

    3. Launch the Discover Store and search for protontricks and install

    4. Launch protontricks and select the game from the list

    5. Choose “Select the default wineprefix”

    6. On the next scren choose "Run Uninstaller"

    7. Click EA App and then choose "Modify/Remove" to unistall it

    8. Now choose "Install" and browse to the EA App you downloaded (most likely in Downloads)

    9. The EA app window will pop up and choose repair

    10. Once the repair is done it will show the login window. I just closed this and went back into Gaming Mode and my game launched fine.

b9tm1e3ipo6l  BrownTown182  Are you running Windows or some Linux distro?  I ask because I see one other comment specifically about Proton, and nothing else about the game not working in Windows.

If you are using Windows though, and assuming the issue hasn't cleared up by the time you read this, I'd like to see dxdiags from both of you.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

dollnymph  EA doesn't officially support Sims 4 (or any game I know of) on any flavor of Linux.  So you'll need to take it up with the Linux community.

Mine also isn't working. For 4 hours now I have tried every fix google, reddit, YouTube and ChatGPT have to offer and nothing works.

Just spent a load of money on new DLC and can't even get the game to launch. Issue started before purchase though and now I wish I waited

I’ve never had this issue before and I’ve tried everything. When I was switching between different protons I noticed there’s was an update for “proton bleeding edge debug” today and I don’t think that’s a coincidence because it was running just fine until today. I talked about this on Reddit and others are also having this issue today. Please fix this !!! :(

  • BenTenpenny  Yes, either of those should be fine.  Any game that says it requires the EA App in the fine print (for example, the Sims 4 page says "Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: EA online activation and EA app software installation and background use required") would work equally well.  And you're right, it looks like the TS1/TS2 Legacy Collections don't require the EA App.

  • That's a good idea. Would ME: Andromeda or Legendary Edition work? I don't think I have any other EA games on Steam apart from TS1 and TS2 which - as far as I remember - don't need EA App.

  • BenTenpenny  This is the first I've heard of the issue (in Linux) post-patch, although that doesn't mean much given the lack of Linux users on this site.  Do you have other EA games you could try to run?  If a different game works, and it requires the EA App (so not Apex Legends, which can be played using only Steam), that means Sims 4 is the issue.  If no EA App games work on your Deck, it's likely the App at fault.

I can flag this thread for EA community managers, but they likely won't be around for a couple days, and they're going to want as much info as you can provide.
