"The Sims 4 Has Stopped Working"

I have not had a chance to play The Sims 4 since I updated my computer to Windows 10, so I can only guess that this has something to do with the Windows upgrade since my game was working fine previously.

Every time I attempt to open the game, the screen immediately goes white and I get the pop up box stating "The Sims 4 Has Stopped Working".

I have read countless threads online, and have exhausted EVERY effort to fix this on my own. I am now at a loss....Please help. How can I get back in to my game?

Here is what I have tried: (hope I remember everything) (basically it is everything on all the thread here about Sims not running)

  1. Reinstall game
  2. Reinstall game and remove The Sims 4 folder from My Documents
  3. Remove saves folder
  4. Remove Mods folder
  5. Exclude Both The Sims 4 folders from Malwarebytes Anti Malware, and Windows Defender, and Windows Firewall
  6. Run As Administrator (which used to be the fix when I had issues)
  7. Double check its running on the NVIDIA graphics and not Integrated
  8. Share both The Sims 4 folders with "Everyone" and change to Read/Write
  9. Uncheck the box in Game properties within Origin to stop Origin from running in game
  10. Add -w to Target bar in Properties
  11. Removed the Windows.old file
  12. Updated Microsoft Visual C++ x64 and x86
  13. Clean Boot (this didn't go properly I don't think, programs were still opening on restart)
  14. Turning off all Anti Virus and Malware programs
  15. Updated Graphics Card drivers
  16. Installed game on other computer and verified that my Origin account can and does download the sims onto another windows 10 computer and it will run.
  17. Fresh Install of Windows 10

So now I have backed up my files from my computer that I wanted to keep to an external hard drive, and did a fresh install of Windows 10 and started my computer over. Downloaded my few main programs that I have always had on my computer, and The Sims 4 STILL will not work....... what the heck else can I do? I am very angry, I want to play my game....

  • All other games have no issues; WoW, LoL, DOTA2, Diablo 3.

So I'm thinking it must be an issue with my graphics card drivers, because I just had an idea to set it to run on the Integrated Graphics and the game started in windowed mode. I called my sister and when she gets home, she is going to tell me what version drivers she has on hers. She says she updated to the Windows 10 drivers, so I dunno....but she is going to check in a bit.

Wonder if the game will run without crashing... Will update in a bit. 🙂

  • Also I should have added, my sister has the same EXACT laptop as I do, and her game works no problem after upgrading to Win10.

I don't want to go back to Win 7...I deleted the old files and I'm not sure if I even could anyways. I was hoping someone would have any other ideas.

The game has always worked fine with this video card, I know its not the best but I have never had any problems at all, not even with lag.

  • I found this thread off of that last link you sent, and my graphics card is in yellow on the list, so it should work still..... :/

Do you have other games installed ? Do they work fine ? Maybe other EA Games ?

Do you also use the same security software as your sister ? Similar programs ?

Did you also reinstall Origin itself ?

What programs were still running after clean boot ?

Interesting. Yours did look updated from the date your DxDiag shows but maybe an older one is better.

Let me know how it goes.

  • Well, I have verified that the issue is my updated graphics drivers. NVIDIA forums confirm that thousands of others are having issues with most games as well. My sister never updated her graphics drivers (she has a laptop identical to mine), and has no issues with her games. My games will now only run on Integrated Graphics setting. I also cannot find the drivers she has available online, so I am just going to have to stick it out until they fix the drivers.

So if anyone with NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards is having this issue, its the drivers most likely. NVIDIA also has released a driver "fix" on the 25th, but it does not fix this issue. But at least I can play again.
