The Sims 4 is using up all of my bandwidth

When I open The Sims 4 my internet speed tanks, I’m only ever doing one other task on my Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16ITH6, I work from home and I have super slow WiFi to begin with too speed is usually 5MBPS. For work I use VMware Horizon Client and in that I’m only browsing the web and taking phone calls, nothing super task heavy and it’s the middle of the night so it’s just sitting open, every time I try to open the sims 4 I have a latency issue with my work and switching tabs is slower than molasses. I just downloaded the sims 4 with a majority of the DLC (I don’t have the most recent 38 DLCs), and no custom content, the game runs fine and I’ve turned off all online features even went into offline mode for the EA app yet my issue persists. My internet provider is AT&T and I’m in a rural area so there isn’t currently any better options, in the past I didn’t have this issue and I have not been able to get in contact with EA support. I have repaired the game and that also didn’t help, and it doesn’t look like the files for the legacy edition exist on my PC. When I close the game everything goes back to normal so I assume that restarting my router isn’t going to change anything. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Additional info, the only thing connected to my WiFi is the PC, my cellphone, and my thermostat; I use the AT&T app to prioritize the internet onto the computer; I have an 11th gen intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11800H @ 2.30GHz processor, 15.8 GB of usable RAM, and a 64-bit operating system; I’m upgraded to windows 11 home edition.

  • GabrielleAlicia  Did you restart the game and your computer after disabling Online Social Access?  It shouldn't matter, but perhaps something got stuck with the game or the EA App.

Additionally, does this happen if you set your phone as a mobile hotspot (using data, not your home wifi) and connect your computer to it?  This shouldn't use much data at all with the EA App in offline mode, and it's a useful test.

I did restart the game after disabling online features, I’ve also restarted the EA client. I have tried with my phone on the WiFi as well as disconnecting my phone from the WiFi with no change. I fully shut down my computer after work each day so it’s always a fresh boot up when I start everything.

  • GabrielleAlicia  I specifically meant connecting your phone to your computer while your phone is using data, as in, your computer is using your phone's data rather than your home wifi.  I was wondering whether there was some kind of issue related to your home wifi network, not that it's broken overall but that it and Sims 4 aren't playing well together.  So please try exactly that if you haven't already.

Separately, do you know when this started?  The most recent patch created a file that looks like EA data collection to some of us, and it's created even with the App in offline mode; the only way to stop it, other than to deny permission to the folder it's in, is to take the computer offline.  So I'm wondering whether this is just a result of the newest patch (and perhaps this new "feature") or preceded it.

My issue started on 5/29 which is also when I downloaded everything, I will have to try out using my phone as a hotspot to see if that changes things

My phone offers a significantly faster WiFi speed (60MBPS) when not using the game after loading up the game with EA in online mode the speed goes down to 17MBPS which would be fine if that’s what my typical speeds were however that is not the case as of now. When EA is in offline mode the WiFi speed stays at 60MBPS so I’m not sure why my regular WiFi is being tanked.

  • GabrielleAlicia  I'm not sure either, but you can try blocking everything EA-related in the Windows firewall, or a third-party program if you use one.  This is separate from your antivirus.  You may find several distinct entries, so try them separately and together.

I'm not in front of a Windows PC at the moment and so can't give a better description, but if you need me to, I can look again later today and see what looks suspicious.
