The Sims 4 will frequently delete all my saves

Its happened before when I had the game a while ago, and I just redownloaded it a few days ago (I have around 4-5 mods). Everything *seemed* fine, I opened the game, made the save, played, saved the game and left. When I went to log in yesterday it was completely wiped clean and I had to start over.

Does anyone know how to prevent this from happening or how to fix it if it ever happens again? I've copied the entire saves folder, if it happens again and I copy that back in will it restore my saves?

  • TheOwlGang  Is OneDrive running on your computer?  Even if you never use it, OneDrive could be syncing your data, and occasionally removing the files and keeping them only in cloud storage.

Separately, where is the game installed?  Please open the EA App, click Sims 4 > Manage > View properties, and list the file path you see there.

To answer your question, yes, copying back the saves folder will restore them as long as you're moving them to the correct location AND the trigger for the saves being deleted doesn't happen right away again.  But it would be best to solve the underlying issue.

I do not believe i have one drive up and running, but j can always check. And the sims 4 is just straight up installednon my documents folder

  • TheOwlGang  If Sims 4 is installed into Documents > Electronic Arts, according to the EA App, that would explain why your saves keep getting deleted.  They'd also be in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4, and therefore be combined with the game's program files.

Any update or repair of the game would verify the files in the install folder, potentially deleting anything that isn't part of the program files.  That would include saves and other user data.

Point is, you need to install the game somewhere that is NOT in Documents > Electronic Arts, and preferably not in Documents at all.  Before removing it, grab any user data you'd like to preserve, for example the Tray folder contains saved households and builds, if its contents haven't been deleted too.  Then uninstall the game and install it anywhere else.  The default C:\Program Files\EA Games is fine, as is a folder you create yourself for this purpose.

I would strongly suggest reinstalling even if Sims 4 is installed directly in Documents (not inside the Electronic Arts folder), for various reasons.

Please also make sure the game isn't reading a location in the OneDrive folder.  Once you've reinstalled it, open it and find the location of your user folder as described here:

Please list the full file path you see.  You can write [username] instead of your actual username if you want, but leave everything else intact.

Wait so where should I install it then? Or should I just move the actual electronic arts folder itself?

  • TheOwlGang  No, don't move the Electronic Arts folder.  As I said, back up any user data you want to preserve: saves, Tray files, mods and custom content, screenshots.  Then uninstall the game through the EA App and install it somewhere that isn't in Documents.

As I said, you can install it to the default C:\Program Files\EA Games, or you can choose a different location that is NOT in Documents.  It doesn't matter.
