The Sims 4 won't load correctly

Every time I try to play the sims it never loads properly, it shows a white screen and plays the background music but nothing shows up except the game cursor. I also can't close the game down properly and usually have to shut down my laptop completely.

I never used to have this problem until after I got cats and dogs and the last time the game managed to load was January this year, but it then crashed and this has been happening since.

I have the legacy version and have updated origin, my laptop and repaired the game twice. I have also clean booted and it still doesn't work. I haven't got any custom content in game either that may interfere. Can anyone help? I have attached a dxdiag file as well just in case.

  • @mturne16  There are a number of issues in your dxdiag.  First of all, your processor wasn't detected.  This could be a random blip, or it could be serious.  A good place to start is with a couple of checks of your Windows system files; this will also cover many of the other errors mentioned.   Here's how to do it:

    • Hit Windows key-X
    • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Command prompt (Administrator),” whichever option is offered
    • Inside the window that appears, copy and paste “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes into the window, and enter
    • The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here
    • After it reaches 100%, hit Windows key-X again
    • Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Command prompt (Administrator)”
    • Inside the window, copy and paste “sfc /scannow” without quotes into the window, and enter
    • Post the message you receive here

Please make sure Windows is up to date as well.  Here's how to do it in Windows 8.1:

The driver for your graphics card is also quite old.  Asus offers a slightly newer one for your laptop here:

I'm not sure how much it will help though.  A driver older than Sims 4 is going to struggle with the game even if everything else works properly.  Even with Windows 10, the Asus GPU driver is several years old, and Intel doesn't offer a current one.

Besides, even with a current driver, your laptop's hardware is quite weak for Sims 4.  While it's above the minimum requirements for the base game, Cats & Dogs is a demanding pack, and your laptop might not be able to keep up.  The fact that a clean boot didn't help means there's probably not a whole lot you can do.

If you want to keep trying to play though, here are some steps you can take:

    • Remove your entire Sims 4 game folder from Documents\Electronic Arts; you can put it on your desktop
    • Restart your computer before playing, then open only Origin and the game, nothing else
    • Before launching TS4, put Origin into offline mode and then disconnect your computer from the internet: disable wifi and/or pull the ethernet cable
    • If nothing else works, disable Cats & Dogs and see if you can play without it:  https://sims4.crinrict.com/eng/2017/03/disable-single-packs/

You might also try downloading the Legacy Edition of the game.  Even though your laptop is 64-bit, the LE could help because it's a bit less demanding than the standard version.  You can download the Legacy Edition from the Extra Content tab on the Sims 4 page in Origin.

@puzzlezaddict Thank you so much for your reply, I had a feeling that maybe the game was too demanding for my laptop once expansion packs were added, it is quite a few years old.

I tried to check the Windows system files and it came up with "Error 32: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process". It also said where the log file could be found but I'm not very sure how to access it as it was another code.

As far as I'm aware Windows is up to date, it installs automatically and when I checked again nothing came up. I've also downloaded the newer graphics card that you recommended, so hopefully that will help in some way.

I might consider getting a pc instead of trying to demand so much from this old thing, especially if there's not much that can be done.

@mturne16  If you want to run the Windows file checks again, restart your computer before trying, and don't open anything else.  I did check whether the commands worked in Windows 8.1, and they should, although you can try writing "DISM" rather than "DISM.exe" in the first part of the first command.

Don't worry about the log files, at least not now.  I can show you how to retrieve them later, if necessary.

If you do decide in the end to get another computer, you're welcome to ask for advice either in general or on a specific system here.  Desktops that can run the whole game on ultra graphics settings can be $700 U.S. or cheaper (monitor not included); prices are higher in other countries.  Even below that level, there are systems in the $500-600 range that would run Sims 4 quite well on high settings at the very least.
