White Screen Of Death

Hello Everyone,

While I know there are posts about this already, it seems my experience is different from others so, I thought I would post this experience separately.

Just recently, I began using Custom Content like clothing and objects for my game. I managed to keep it under 500 MB of content and less than 400 items. When all of a sudden, I started up my game by selecting "Load Game" and got this white screen that remained. I had to manually shut my computer down and restart the computer again. I then restarted the game and it worked normally again.

So, I knew or thought I knew it had to be one of the Custom Content or more that might be doing this. So, I took the Mods folder out.  I then Cleaned the Caches in the game, the EA App Cache, repaired the game, made sure all of my PC specs were up to date and created a whole new game.

I then added one folder of content in at a time. When all was fine and no problems occurred with each separate folder, I began to reintroduce multi folders back into the game gradually.... still all was well. I did this until all folders were reunited again and still all was functioning well. No issues.

Then days later the white screen returned. I cleared all Caches, and took all Mods out. Started a whole new game. All seemed well but then the game became laggy and the white screen would surface, but it won't stay, so far. It would last a while then clear up on its own with no Mods at all in the game.

Additionally, I have a gaming computer and all is up to date. I have about 60GB of space available on my PC as well. So, I know it is not my PC itself causing the issue.

Any help with this will be most appreciated. Thank you.

If that doesn't or didn't help, please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

Hello and thank you for responding,

That is correct. No mods or custom content were used after I cleared all caches and attempted to fix the game as stated above. I then started all over again with a fresh new game and gradually readded all my mods and custom content again. For a while all was running very smoothly. So, I just continued on playing when game became goofy yet again with the white screen and some staggered movement.  I again took all mods/custom content out, cleared all cache files and started with yet another new game deleting that new game I just started where problems began again.

Now, with the newest I am working with now has absolutely no custom content or mods and while the white screens will sometimes loom for a bit it does go away... eventually.  But when it looms for a bit like that I hold my breath wondering if this will be the time it crashes. Just now, when I attempt to play my game for a bit I entered debug mode and my game froze and crashed to desktop. This never happened before either. What is bugging my game?????

I have been tempted to buy about five kits plus even break down and buy a newer Expansion pack of EA's for Christmas as I really do like their content and would like them in my game. I thought after this big fix... maybe... just maybe it would be safe to buy more. But now with this... I'm no longer confident at this point to do so.

Thank you for any help you can give me. Enclosed you will find my DxDiag.

UPDATE: Hold up for a minute here... I don't understand how I did this, but there was one mod that got into my folder. It is the no pet sickness that I got from Curseforge and is said to be compatible with the latest patch. So I don't think that can be the cause of this. But just wanted to be upfront with everything. I noticed in reading the crash report that my game read as "modded true" I was all set to take a picture to show you that my mods folder was empty when I saw that one mod remaining in the folder. How? Idk. But there it is. I will try to see if that is the cause, but please. if there is anything else here... please let me know as I cannot see how this updated mod is affecting my game this way.

Another Update: I now have no mods at all in my game and made sure all caches are deleted. I go to build mode and my game gets stuck and stays that way for a while then it finally snaps out of it and I am able to continue. The white screen still appears to stall for a bit when I either load the game, but much more so when I exit out of either a world to enter another world or when I leave a lot to go to the next lot to do more builds then it too eventually clears up again. But it lasts long enough for me to worry my game is about to freeze again.

Another new occurrence is I was exiting a lot in Mt. Komorebi to go to another lot to do a build and the loading screen that shows the plumbob with all these sayings that scrolls along the bottom kept going, and going, and going. It didn't freeze altogether obviously, as new sayings kept scrolling along the bottom of the screen. But after 5 minutes it wouldn't exit out of that screen. I had to manually force my PC to shut down and restart my Pc back up again. I went into that same lot where the problem began and attempted to exit out like before where I had gotten stuck, but this time there was no hesitation or stall. It just quickly went to the world screen again.

Neither of these things has been a problem in the past for my games until most recently and too with the latest patch. Looks like it wasn't that one mod I found in my folder.  Nor was it my other CC or Mods, as the same things are occurring without them.

    Please help. Thank you.

  • wasikm007  Unfortunately, I can't download your dxdiag because something broke on the site in the last day or two.  I've flagged it, and hopefully it'll be addressed soon.  But in the interim, if you want me to look at your dxdiag, upload it to a third-party filesharing site (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) and either post the link here or send it to me via PM.  If you use Google Drive, make sure "anyone with the link" can view the upload.

I do have one immediate suggestion that might help though: playing in windowed mode.  Even if you don't want to play that way in general, it's a useful test, and you can try windowed fullscreen as well.

When the game hangs on a loading screen, it normally produces a lastexception file in the user folder, and I'd like that as well, either uploaded to a third-party site (alongside your dxdiag if you upload that too) or copied and pasted into a reply here.  The LE may list a problem with the lot that you could solve—you'd load it in Build mode and make the necessary change(s).

As for how the mod got there, Curseforge can download fresh copies of your mods, sometimes without being prompted.  So I'd suggest either disabling the auto-update feature or checking the Mods folder every time whenever you're trying to test without mods or cc.

Thank you for all your help.  I was so puzzled how that one Mod crept in there when I emptied the mods folder to be free and clear. To know that Curseforge can download fresh copies is something I was not aware of, so thank you for that bit of info. I noticed things on this site are not working properly for uploads like photos, etc.... lol  par for the course along with our games. As far as playing in windows mode, I shouldn't need to as NVidia automatically  sets my game settings for me to the highest, as I do have a full out gaming PC. I just did a recent update on my drivers with them as well. I even did an adjustment I shouldn't have to and lowered the lighting from the highest settings down to the next option, as I heard that can help with some glitches and lag in the game. That didn't seem to help either.

It has to be within the game itself, as it is clearly not my mods or CC doing this. As I am getting the same things or worse without them being there. I've been looking for a Last Exception with all of these incidents and getting nothing that way either. The only thing that was produced is when the game crashed, which is included in the DxDiag.

Additionally when I went into Debug, everything I tried to do did not produce the two floor lit signs from Strangerville. I used to use those quite a bit in my game. Now, you can't find them anywhere. Who knows now how much more stuff could be missing from Debug other than these specific ones that are missing that I found. But I know for a fact that when something is bugged like this it can trigger odd things throughout the rest of the game. So perhaps what ever is suppressing these things from showing up properly is also part of the cause.

Sadly, I didn't read through the whole posting of Dag Dag to Lag until yesterday. To read that it is now up to us to limit our clutter in the game when clutter kits and other forms of clutter have recently been included in the DLC Packs of EA, to limit the amount of functioning objects like stoves, refrigerators, etc. that offer a lot of choices to them, windowed objects, etc. per on a lot and throughout each world. To watch how we even angle our cameras for the game so not too many other sims from other lots bog down and cause lag for our current lot tells me that even with all the recent fixes that this game has undergone, it is far to overloaded that when one thing gets fixed it breaks another to where we can't play our games like we once used to as the core of these games are broken and not being built up to handle all that is being released.

I would love to see EA keep this series going as I do love the Sims 4 a lot, but if we are being held accountable for these breaks when clearly I am seeing it is not always the mods/cc.... and love building my own homes, businesses, etc. with only maxis/EA content... this tells me there is more than meets the eye here. With this recent fix, it has stirred up new ones or has enhanced the ones that were left untouched.

I will have to wait until this site gets fixed before we continue, as I don't use Cloud and don't trust Google Drive. Hopefully this site will get fixed soon. In a couple of days I will try to resubmit the DxDiag for you to look into it further, again which I thank you for your willingness to help.

LOL... wouldn't it be the irony that too many posts are causing the errors to this site... just like too much content and outstanding bugs are affecting our game. Oh the ironies.😄

  • wasikm007  The point of playing in windowed mode is to see whether it works, not that a computer can't handle fullscreen mode.  It's a diagnostic test—some problems only show up in fullscreen, so either way, we learn something.

I would suggest NOT letting the Nvidia app optimize your game settings, at least not all the time.  It's fine to allow it to choose your settings once, but I've seen problems result from having the option enabled all the time.  Besides, you might want to change the settings for one reason or another and wouldn't want them to keep reverting each time you load the game.

I can see your dxdiag now, and the two Sims 4 crashes are generic: the game crashed because it crashed because of an access violation.  There are some likely unrelated Windows update errors, and two recent crashes of the EA App, so I'd start by uninstalling and reinstalling the App.  This shouldn't touch your Sims 4 install unless you've installed the game into the App's folder (C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\EA Desktop).  When reinstalling, run the installer as an admin: right-click the download and select "Run as administrator."  Restart afterwards and before trying to play.

I'd still like to know whether windowed mode helps though.

As for the lag-related post, the general point is that the more items are on a lot, the more the game engine has to render, and the more work it has to do, the more likely the player will experience lag or other performance issues.  It's pretty straightforward.  What I found interesting is the explanation of what types of items are particularly heavy, for example I had no idea that pools/ponds/platforms contributed as much as they do.  Without getting too much into the weeds, I think the suggestion the post is trying to make is just "use content in moderation, and back off if you see these symptoms" rather than "we made all this stuff but you can't use it."  And more importantly, we can hope that this more rigorous description reflects the developers' goal to address it, eventually, in a way that's global and sustainable.  Bug fixes are all well and good, but the piecemeal approach can miss the forest for the trees.
