Both parties are at fault here. EA's fault for not communicating to the masses about the extension date and it's the customers' fault for spending the money BECAUSE they wanted the item, desperately enough to spend real money on donuts.

If the desire for the item was not there, there wouldn't be any problem to begin with, even if EA failed to communicate to the masses. The only problem would just be people complaining, "I WAS LOOKING FORWARD FOR THIS EVENT TO END AND A NEW ONE TO START!" Or somewhere along those lines. I guess you can say purchasing the donut at that very moment would have been a gamble (timeline extension or not). Either way, it's both EA and the consumers' fault.
