IMPORTANT:
when you start the quest involving mom and pop store, send 2 characters first, collect then send the full three, this is the only time they will have a 6 second task for the shovels (that im aware of) so take advantage of it.
as for the shovels im using a battleship method, the middle square between 9 squares. the gem appears to be near stones?
