Controller doesn't recognize after being disconnected on PC

I have this problem with my PC controller. It keeps disconnecting and re-connecting. Since the last patch when it's trying to reconnect the controller gets recognized as second controller. This leads to me having to close the game and restart, because I'm supposed to play with the controller I started the game with. I've had this controller and EA FC for over 3 years, the issue with it is reappearing, but only since the last patch its not possible to continue the game with the same controller.
It is clearly a bug, as the controller gets displayed as first controller for a second, then switches to being second controller.

Like this, I can not play the game anymore.
