Custom Controller Mapping Breaks Shot Cancel Mechanic
Platform: PC, PS5
Controller: Xbox Controller, DualSense
Game Versions: FIFA 22 → EA SPORTS FC (latest)
Issue Summary:
Shot cancel (Shoot + LT + RT) and power shot cancel do not work at all when using in-game custom controller mappings. This has been consistently happening since FIFA 22 and is still present in newer titles.
Custom Control Setup:
Based on Alternate preset with these changes:
RT = Sprint (unchanged)
RB → LB (Finesse Shot)
LB → LT (Chip Shot / Player Switching in defense)
LT → RB (Shield / Jockey)
Steps to Reproduce:
Go to Controller Settings
Select “Alternate” preset
Apply the custom changes listed above
Start any match
Attempt shot cancel (Shoot + LT + RT)
Expected Result:
Shot cancel and power shot cancel should work regardless of custom controller mappings.
Actual Result:
Shot cancel does not trigger at all.
Workaround (Not Ideal):
Using Steam Input remapping restores shot cancel functionality. However, this introduces another issue:
LT + Y (lobbed through pass) often registers as a ground through pass
Frequency:
100% reproducible
Additional Notes:
Tested across multiple controllers and platforms
Also reproduced on PS5 with DualSense
Suggests this is not a hardware issue
Likely related to how custom input mappings handle multi-button combinations
Why This Matters:
Shot cancel is a core gameplay mechanic, especially in competitive play. Players who rely on custom control schemes are effectively locked out of using it.
Request:
Can EA investigate whether custom controller mappings are breaking multi-input mechanics like shot cancel?
