my sims are unable to hold their date on a custom venue lot type. This make the experience very limited as I'm using these custom venues to create date spots for my sims.
edit: after testing social events like birthdays and weddings can't happen on custom venues as well (confused it with getaways, since they can happen simultaneously with social events)
To be sure, you don't see them as option when creating a date, right ?

It would say that lot is not available when picking the location of the date
I'm unsure whether this a bug or intentional game design, but I downloaded a custom venue that I wanted to use for my Sim's birthday party and could not choose the custom venue as my party location.
I placed the venue in Forgotten Hollow and had to change the venue to a park for it to show up as an option when I was scheduling the party through the calendar.
I don't know if this is by design or not, but if it is, it's poor designing. The entire point with custom venues is being able to style them as you want, with the activity as you want. To then not let them be used for social events, such as dates, birthday parties, weddings or funerals is poor designing. I have a luxury hotel that I want to use as my wedding location, but now I have to change it to a lounge to be able to. It's frustrating because it means that a lot of the work I put into it by customising the staff and guests is now wasted.
