Even if there is a double bed and you assign "left side to ..." "right side to ..." only one sim can sleep there and the other searches out a bench. ...

This is true. I'm using the townies that run Camp Gibbi Gibbi. I assigned the husband and wife each a side. Then, I keep trying to tell them to sleep but only one of them does at a time and that sim ignores the assigned side also.
