This also happened to me. I was on a getaway and travelled home to buy an imaginary friend. Activated. Then put in my inventory and travelled back to getaway. I couldn't interact with it anymore other than the basic "play" options. When I returned home after the getaway finished, the imaginary friend stats reset and I had to start over but afterward it worked as expected. I assumed it was because I was away from home that things didn't work properly on the first attempt.
