I'm having a similar issue. Traveling somewhere without the imaginary friend in your inventory seem to mess them up somehow. My child sim went to the park and I got a message saying the imaginary friend got sent to the inventory. But after that I cannot summon the imaginary friend anymore. I already lost two IM's because I forgot to bring them with me.
Edit:
Oh, and the imaginary friends also disappear from the childs relationship panel.
