This just happened to me yesterday. First time was 8 months ago.
Only "workaround" I found so far to be able to use my save file is use an earlier save and right before the death time (as it always happened at the same time/night) cheat the kid into a teenager with cas.fulleditmode until the next day and then revert him back to a kid.
Of course all progress for that sim was lost (7 days of gameplay) and it was not exactly the same sim but at least I could play again with that save...
