I'm also a rotational player with animals aging off and when I switched just now to a family that had a chicken coop, Grim immediately appeared to reap a chicken. I quickly checked all the other chickens and they said they were Young Adult age, so I thought they were safe, but over the next few Sim days, Grim kept coming back and taking one of them and their age was suddenly showing as "One Last Pet" as they were reaped.
I don't have any mods, but this is a file I've been playing for a long time (since Lovestruck came out).
ETA: Grim came and reaped the baby chicks, too. That was disheartening to see. So it's not an age thing at all. He's just clearing the entire coop.
