While trying to have my sims do a dance battle on the dancefloor, the action keeps cancelling itself after npcs are forced to leave the dancefloor

Having this issue today after seeing a post on X about it. Tested it on a nightclub venue I built, using MWS dance floor Grande version. DJ spawned as expected, and dance battle started between my sim and the NPC just fine but then cancels out after the first animation for each. Replaced with Electrodance floor from event and same thing happened. This is in my legacy gameplay save.
I then tested on a new save using minamalist's dance floor from party kit in basegame nightclub using a radio. This time they started as expected and even seemed to be progressing longer but ultimately it did cancel out again. Mods previously installed but removed.
