I'm having the same problem, ive removed all of my mods and still get the exception, I'm playing on windows PC.

is this any household you try it with ? Does your Sim have any mastery perks ?
I only play with two households and the other is living off the grid, so only one. My sim that i attempt this action with does have mastery perks
Could you test with another household (just create a new save game for testing) for a Sim without the trait to see if it works there.
