I cannot actually PLAY the game

I am able to start the game, load a save file, create sims, make homes, but the moment i hit the "Play" button in the bottom right corner, the game loads for about 8 seconds and puts me on the Home Worlds" screen. I have mods, but I've tried turning them off and it's still not working. No idea whats happening.
