I want to comment that I am struggling hard with this issue as well. I've read the original post but I'm not going to read all the comments. For me, I have found that saving and going to the main menu and back into my save isn't enough. I have to save and exit the game entirely and go back in. When I do, the item stack being stuck in my hand mid transfer is gone until I try to move another one. When needing to move several stacks like I am trying to do at the moment, this is IMMENSELY infuriating.
To describe the full situation for myself... I have lots of plants, crystals, collectibles and other inventory items in my save. I'm trying to grow perfected plants and discover what is in the world around me so collecting is happening a lot. I am utilizing several storage bins from the workshop pack, fridge, apothecary table, and flower arranging station for sure to try and divide up and organize my items. Having it all jumbled in a Sim's inventory is a nightmare for me. I know for sure that pulling collectables/stacks of collectibles out of storage items into a Sim's inventory results in the issue where I successfully move that intended stack but then the grabber hand has the next stack over and won't release it. While this situation is active, I am unable to transfer any more items. I also see the item icon glitched with a second picture of it slightly off the original one. The grabber hand with the item in it can be seen not only in the inventory tab but also in any game menu which makes no sense. I'm less certain if I have experienced this moving items from sim's inventory to another sim or from sim's inventory to storage object.
What I have tried to do:
Hitting 'esc' to let go of the stack/item
Exiting the storage item's inventory
Exiting the sim's inventory
Saving my game then exiting the save to the main menu and reentering the game
These all fail to cancel the grab and unfreeze inventory.
The only solution to unfreeze the inventory and release the item frozen in grabber hand for me has been saving and exiting the game software entirely and restarting the game and resuming my save file. Very time consuming.
I have never bothered to log into this website before or report a bug in some other way despite having to deal with bugs/breaks/glitches beyond count but this is TOO FAR. Inventory management is critical to my play style and this has entirely disrupted my enjoyment of this game. I've given y'all thousands of dollars and this is what I get in return. SHAME ON YOU EA/MAXIS/SIMS TEAM.
EDIT: I do not play with mods.
The only thing that can work is to put the items onto a surface first BEFORE putting things into the sim's inventory. It looks like hobbit-ON has taken this solution farther by showing that it could also work to select a whole stack and try placing it on the floor and then moving into inventory. I am going to try this out now myself.
Also, it is best to not save the game when the bug occurs. Exit without saving to be sure and not save the bug or corrupt your save.
Eureka!!! hobbit-On's solution works for large stacks. They are right. Select a stack and move it to a surface or floor. One of the items will go onto the floor and the rest of the stack can then be placed into the sim's inventory! Thank you hobbit-ON.
Sometimes a item will still catch and stick, but hitting the ESC key will dislodge it.
