I've started having this problem too. I've tested with all mods removed and it remains so I am certain it is not mods. Like others mentioned it is dragging from the fridge (I also tried flower table) to the sim where this occurs. To recreate, simply drag various food stacks to your inventory and one will suddenly not work and that ends your ability to interact with inventory. Sometimes I can see it sort of flicker like it tried to drop it into your inventory and failed.
Clicking an empty space does nothing. Escape does nothing. I notice that the food icon will vanish when you are hovering over other parts of the screen, but if you move the cursor back to where the inventory is you see the food again letting you know it is stuck. Some bugs I can go out to the world pick screen and back in to fix it but with this one it is only a full game restart that fixes this issue. I will try the trick mentioned in this thread of placing one item on the ground first to see if that works for me.
IMHO this may be related to how much is stored in the fridge because I noticed it showed up on a well established lot that has been harvesting for quite a while and therefore already has a lot of food in the fridge. I don't actually know how much because stacks say "99+" and that could be 1000 in a stack for all I know.
