Items are getting stuck in the grab hand when moving from stacks to inventory

Trying to move anything between storage (ex: the fridge) and the sims inventory is moving the first stack and then automatically selecting another object in the storage. The next item or stack selected is permanently stuck on the hand causing multiple issues. I've tested this with multiple saves, and new saves. It happens in all of the old saves. In a new save, the problem does not occur UNLESS you go into an old save with the problem and then load the new save. The problem will then occur in the new save.

Things I have tried.

Reverting to an older save
Repairing game
Removing the sims 4 folder and allowing the game to rebuild it, then moving the old saves back.

The screenshots show a stack of onions stuck in my "hand" and the floating second stack when clicking on something with the stuck object. You can also see it remains stuck when going into the game menu.

This problem occurred in every scenario I tested it in, so my game is essentially unplayable, unless I just don't use the sims inventory at all.

Possible workarounds to try

  • Try clicking on an empty space on the inventory, click with the right mouse button or press ESC.
  • Try dragging the objects to the world first before dragging into your inventory. Can only do one object at the time this way.

Please do state the following info when posting in this thread. Would be interesting to see which users are affected by this. I was able to replicate it on a save with no mods/cc but it would be interesting if it happens to players that never had any as I can't duplicate the issue on my own save games.

  • What platform are you playing on ?
  • Are you using mods/cc ?

  • I can confirm that when this bug appears it happens in all Maxis made storage items. I can also confirm that storage items made by modders are unaffected.

  • I am also currently experiencing this problem. I can go into build/buy mode and can continue to play the game after going back to live mode, but cannot interact with anything from my fridge as it gets stuck again. I have to completely quit the game, and every time I go back in I can only take a few items before it does this again. Clicking on an empty space does not help fix it, I have to completely leave the game.

You can avoid much of this by taking things out of the storage units and putting them out into the world first before putting them into your sim's inventory. For example click on the wrapped meat and then select one of them and put it onto a counter or table, Then do the same for as many as you need. It takes longer, but you avoid the sticking issue. Also after going into build mode, you can often do something such as dragging a plate or trash to the sink or trash can and that will allow you to once again select things without having to quit.

If you do quit, it is best to do so without saving.

Follow up to this. I started a new save shortly after this post awhile back, and now that save is having the same issue. I don't know what is triggering it other than maybe the amount of stacks (or items?) in the storage?

EDIT: Please, fix this as soon as possible. It makes collecting/using items borderline impossible.

  • I am having the same exact issue. It doesn't matter how many times I quit and restart it still occurs. I also did a game repair and still getting the issue. I have no mods or cc. It is starting to really irritate me because I just built my barn and got all my chickens, cows, llamas, and horses after building up my small empire to 90k simoleons! I do NOT want to start a new game!

There is no point in starting a new game. Your best option if you do not want to use CC storage is to take things out and place them in the world first, on a counter, table, or the ground. You can then take them and place them into your sims inventory. It is more tedious this way, but it does work. Hopefully after the holidays they will issue an hot fix for this issue.

  • I've been having the same problem for a few weeks. It's so annoying that I've just stopped playing, but today I tried again and nope, still happening. I just need to take things out of my sim's fridge and put them in her inventory so I can sell them at the finchwick fair, but when I click on something in the fridge and try to put it in her inventory, it either stays stuck in the cursor-hand, or goes in her inventory but the next item in the fridge instantly automatically appears in the cursor-hand. After that happens, I can't pick up anything else or drop what's in the hand. Also, the little sim inventory button on the bottom right of the screen keeps the little circle around it, even after I've closed the fridge and sim inventories. When I open any other inventory after that, or reopen the sim inventory, whatever that last item was that had been in the cursor-hand is still there, in the cursor-hand. Trying to click on other things doesn't help, I always just have to quit without saving. It makes finchwick fair in particular unplayable. Cottage Living is the only reason I still play sims 4, so as long as this keeps happening, the game is completely unplayable for me.
