Started the reaper career and I’m supposed to determine the cause of death of a Sim who isn’t on the lot? I’ve tried to locate the deceased sim several times but there isn’t one on the lot

When my Reaper sim went to the school principal's house, both she and her husband immediately left before they could be interviewed. They were the only witnesses, even though there was another child and a teen on the lot. My sim could therefore not complete their daily work tasks.
I get the options to talk to Grim and if I click on myself I get the option to "locate body" but there just isn't one to find so instead of looking for one, my sim just watches tv and eats and stuff. No body anywhere on the lot and no option to leave the mission and start a new one without just ending the day entirely.
Also, no cc, no mods, clean install.
I'm playing the Grim Reaper Career for the first time, and when my sim went to a lot to practice on Kenny, no one was there. Granted, the lot was empty: i.e., no house, just a normal empty lot, but I would have thought that the 'deceased' would at least be laying on the ground. Except there was nothing. I tried 'locating the deceased' but it didn't do anything.
I closed my game and reloaded hoping that would help, but I got the same problem.
