When you use the washing machine, with no upgrades, it become inoperable after 2 or 3 uses. You click the laundry basket and choose Washer but it's grey. The only thing you can do is to buy another machine. My sims have bought 5 machines in 3 sims seasons. I started only doing laundry when absolutely necessary to save money.
