(I haven't learnt how to navigate these forums yet, so I hope I'm writing in the right place)
Musical chairs has been an issue for a long time in Sims 4, but I've recently started to have a new type of musical chairs issue, where sims almost always go to another room whenever they get something from their inventory and in some houses also when they get things from the fridge.
Example 1: I have a sim who reads a lot, and she usually keeps the books in her inventory. If she's sitting somewhere and I tell her to read a book in her inventory she goes to another room to sit, and it's always the same pattern. If she's sitting on the bed in her bedroom, she goes to the kitchen to sit at the kitchen table. If she's sitting at the kitchen table, she goes to the living room to sit in the armchair. If she's sitting in the armchair in the living room, she goes to her bedroom to sit on the bed.
Example 2: Another sim in another house. If he takes something out of the fridge in the kitchen, he goes to sit on the bed in his bedroom. There's nothing blocking the table or chairs in the kitchen. If I tell him to sit there he goes there to sit (eventually) and if he takes food from the kitchen counter he usually sits at the kitchen table (but not always, and sometimes he sits on one of the chairs, gets up, and sits down on the other chair, before starting to eat). So it's specifically when he gets something from the fridge that he sits in the bedroom. If there's someone else sitting at the kitchen table already, he will sometimes sit at the kitchen table.

It’s a bit baffling, but Sims apparently choose where to sit by calculating
- comfort
- proximity
- presence of family
If there’s a more comfortable seat, they’ll go there. If the comfort is the same, they’ll go to the closest seat — keep in mind that Sims’ method to appraise distance is a bit counterintuitive for human players. If there’s another household member at home, they’ll try to seat close to them, no matter where.
Sinks used to have a similar issue until the Set Sink Type interaction was put in place — a Sim would use the toilet and trek across the house to wash their hands in the kitchen, as they would collect dirty dishes in the dining room and have an unexpected journey to the bathroom sink on the fourth floor suite.
Maybe a Set Chair Type is the “solution” for this? Lounge, Meal, Both?
Or perhaps putting some glue on all chairs and programming their AI so that they *won’t, under any circumstance,* get up from the chair, unless commanded to do so or if it is absolutely necessary for the queued action to complete. Maybe the Sit command should necessarily override any autonomous self placement for all subsequent actions? “The Plumbob told you to sit HERE, so you’ll stay seated HERE until the end of time or your life depends on it, whichever comes first.”
Not having first-meeting-greetings animations would help, too, specially if a family is having breakfast together in the morning — it is utterly annoying that they sit down, start eating, then get up to greet each other just to sit down again in different seats (or rooms!) just because after X hours they apparently HAVE TO start any conversation with a custom animation. Ending this annoyance would not only reduce musical chairs, but reduce tardiness for school/work.
(Sorry for the rant.)
