I don't have the Adventure Awaits add-on, but the icon for the trip appears when I'm organizing a personalized wedding. Time doesn't count down, so I can't end the wedding. I have to save and exit to the main menu to finish.

Had this issue 2 months ago, sad to see it STILL isn’t fixed.
I have this same issue. There is no way to cancel or end the wedding. I was completely stuck. Exited the game completely, and still ended up back in the never ending event. I started debugging everything that I could think of and I noticed that several of my guests were still (after several hours) sitting at the wedding arch! Turned out it was a bad arch - once I "debugged" it, my event ended and everyone went home.
I have let the event play out, and although it took several game hours it seemed to just end on its own.

Ok! This was plaguing me for two days. Finally I went to the neighborhood my sims lived in. Clicked on their house and then clicked visit highlighting the both of them. It brought them home and they were still married! So the wedding still happened without having to do it all over again.
When creating a custom wedding event, once the event starts it won't end and I can't end it. There is no option to end it (see screenshot).
First time: active Sim on lot where wedding was going to take place, created event via phone. Second time: both sims on home lot, created event via phone. Third time: same as second but with mods removed.

My game had something similar but not exactly like others who've posted here. I tested in an unmodded save. The X was invisible, but as crinrict mentioned in a reply, I got the X when I hovered over the event title.
The big difference for me is that when the last task (Have Toasts) was completed, the event UI vanished and it looked like the event ended.
The participant sims no longer had the group icon above their heads. The event ran from 6pm until just after midnight.
