I've been diligently working through careers. Joining a career after university at level 8. I sent my Sim to "Work Hard" in the Writer Career - Journalist Branch. I watched the work progress start in the middle and almost reach the highest level, but not high enough for promotion. The next day, progress back to middle. Additionally, any task completed, such as writing articles, is reset to incomplete the next morning before the workday. I've stopped playing that save as I'm frustrated and can't achieve the goals I have.
