Soooooo.... How do they decide what gets archived? I figured it would end up like this. Though I hoped with all decency they wouldn't...

Everything is still on EA's plate. You can read the thread I linked above for more information.
I personally find bug archive a bad name as it doesn't mean that bug already reported get closed down. They still are on Maxis plate.
There are some threads that you will see marked as [ARCHIVED] in the Bug archive but that's all either old stuff that got archived at AHQ for various reasons or issues that have a new thread here.
Anyways, I hope reading the linked thread will clear up stuff for you.
