I also felt they were too frequent, especially the one gotten from a contagious spread (that you can get even if your sims are kept happy). I enjoy challenge, but it's really too much and just takes the fun away. I would like it tuned instead of just giving "no ailments" setting, though both would be even better.
Both options are a necessity. I understand why some people wouldn't want an illness feature, but having an option to disable it shouldn't become an excuse for a badly designed feature.
So far it seems that some interactions/moods trigger an ailment 100% of the time which is insane.
