Every time I ask my sims to cook food (which the food menu itself is really laggy and takes forever to load) or they do it themself, when they finish said dish they will just leave it on the counter ...

I have a similar issue - my sims start cooking and then just leave the unprepared food on the counter or in the oven and don't resume making it unless I command them to.
