Sims sit in front of food not eating

I'll put food out for my sim to grab a serving (child, toddler, adult) and they'll grab the serving but when they sit down they won't eat. The food just sits in front of them at the table and they have the action "eat ____" in their window, but they won't actually eat. And their hunger continues to go down while the food sits in front of them. Even if I have them eat on a couch either they just hold the food in front of them, or the dish won't show up at all in their hand. But they'll still have the action "eat ____" in their window, yet their hunger continues to go down... Any tips for fixing this?
