I have the same problem. In one of my saves all the Sims with tattoos have turned pitch black. I didn't use custom tattoos from the galley, only tattoos that came with the different packs, so this issue is NOT just paint mode related. I never use custom anything from the gallery.
I have no mods or cc and I have tried the following already: clear cache, repair game (twice), remove all tattoos, age a sim down or up and my graphic cards is up-to-date.
Nothing works! It started after the latest update, so I think that update broke tattoos for saved games. I started a new game after the update, created a sim with tattoos and she is absolutely fine.
Please, fix this Sims team! I can't continue my Let's Play until my sims are fixed!
Edit: removing the tattoos using x did work after all, but a really fix would still be great, because I want certain Sims to have tattoos
