Alice Madness Returns will not launch

Product: EA Desktop
Platform:PC
Error Report ID (learn how to create an Error Report ID in the sticky post) ca2cada1-7b64-482c-bfb5-f437b4eaba36
Which client functionality are you experiencing this bug with? Launch Game
When did this happen? (dd.mm.yy hh:mm) 01.03.22
Summarize your bug Alice Madness Returns will not launch. After three attempts installing the game, I continue to get the error "There was an error in the application setup. Please reinstall and try again."
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? If the same problem occurs for others, it will be at any attempt to launch the game via shortcut or directly from the EA Desktop app.
What happens when the bug occurs? Every time on launch
What do you expect to see? The actual game rather than a request to keep reinstalling and using my data.

Please fix this error as I would actually like to play the game. I would rather not continue an uninstall/reinstall cycle just to see the same error again and again that will not allow the game to launch.

  • I had the same issue with my Alice Madness Returns, I contacted EA Support and they told me they do not have much support because its an old game and told me to contact Microsoft.

  • @marinaaax3 well that sucks ☹️ I think that if they are providing the game and issue is with their installations they should help out.
  • Same issue here. Originally ran AMR on my Win7 laptop, upgraded it to Win10 and no issues, also runs on my Win10 PC but trying to run the game on my boyfriend's Win11 PC is throwing up the error "There is a problem with your game's setup. Please reinstall the game."

We've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, repairing the download through the EA app, booting via Steam, buying the game on Steam and trying to boot that version, all drivers up to date and my boyfriend has even reimaged Win11 but still no cigar.

Tried the troubleshooting in this thread suggested by Cantiras since Win11 is pretty much a facelift upgrade to Win10 but none of them have worked for me, though they might for others. I've also tried the compatibility workaround from marinaaax3 and that isn't working either. Also tried running through Steam following all these fixes but it throws up driver error 0xc000007b.

I'm at my wit's end with this. We've been trying for months to get the game to launch and even though my boyfriend works in IT software everything he's tried hasn't worked. Our last option is to buy the PS3 version of the game and pray.

I could probably run every Sims game on a smart fridge at this point but we can't get support for AMR? I guess EA really have washed their hands of American McGee in every way. RIP Alice: Asylum.

  • Hi, this might be too late of a reply for you, but hopefully this might help anyone who comes across this problem in the future.
I had the same issue with the game, and after several requests and chats with advisers, one finally gave me a working solution.

The problem, as I saw someone else already mention, is that "Alice: Madness Returns" is an older game that needs certain programs that Windows 11 doesn't (automatically) have.

Here is how I made the game compatible with my Windows 11 laptop.

    I downloaded this:
    1-Net framework 3.5
    2-directx 9.0c runtimes
3-visual c++ (not sure if this is required for it to work, but I did download it)

    Net framework 3.5

-Press windows button + R (Win+R), this will open up a pop up with a search bar.
-In this search bar, you type "OptionalFeatures", and now a pop up will open that has a whole list, including a map called ".NET Framework 3.5".
-Double click on the name and you'll see 2 files. Personally, I clicked the boxes of both of them, but only the upper one is necessary.
-Click on "ok" and follow further given instructions, and your windows will automatically download and install everything that's needed.
-It is adviced to restart your pc after installing stuff, but this is not always necessary.

    Directx 9.0c Runtimes

-For this, you just want to type in your search bar of your internet browser "microsoft directx" and you'll get to the website you have to be.
-Scroll down a bit and there should be a download button, and you have to click this.
-Click on the file once it's downloaded and it'll guide you through the installation of it.
-Again, it's adviced to restart your laptop after the installation but it's not always needed.

    Visuals C++

-Search for "microsoft visual c++" in your internet browser and you should get to a website with "Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads".
-You'll scroll down to a list with downloads, where you can chose between ARM64, 86x and 64x.
-I downloaded 86x and 64x, because the EA-help advisor told me to do so (not sure how this works tho).
-Click on the file once downloaded and it'll guide you through the installation.
-At the end, it'll ask you to restart your device, however I only did that after I installed both of them, to save time.

    ---

This is what I did to fix my game, but of course I cannot guarantee that it'll work for everyone.
