Apex devs have the wrong idea about the P2020

So it’s very clear that the apex developers want the P2020 to be the worst gun in the game — they’ve stated it numerous times on various discussions. And now, in season 15, they’ve even removed hammerpoints, further cementing its place at the bottom. However, I believe this is very unhealthy for the game, and adding to why players never pick up pistols:

The idea both players and devs have for the P2020, or the Peashooter, as players lovingly call it, is that it’s what you pick up on drop to take early fights and get rid of as soon as you find a better gun. It’s an early game only gun. But there’s a problem with this idea; what are you more likely to find on drop, just a P2020, or one of the 23 other guns in ground loot rotation? There should be no such thing as an “early game only” gun, because every gun is an early game gun. There’s just no point to have a gun so substantially underpowered when every gun is equally likely to be picked up and used throughout the entire game. The P2020 should be just as viable as any other gun is across the mid and late stages of the match.

How to fix? Damage buff, and headshot critical increase. Many people suggest increasing base damage anywhere from the current 18 to somewhere between 19 and 22. I think 20 is a safe and deserving middle ground. Base headshot damage I think can be buffed from 27 to 30, to add more value to good accuracy. Keeping in line with that idea, I think we can keep the current 16 damage on limbs, to punish inaccuracy. This I believe creates a more effective weapon, with a unique function. And bring back hammerpoints, of course. No reason for that to be removed.

There has to be a pecking order to weapons or else why have more than one in the game in the first place?

And to answer the question "why have any gun that's only an 'early-game' gun," that's easy. It's to have more useless crap diluting the loot pool and making worthwhile weapons and attachments even harder to find. Rewarding hardcore looters and the lucky. Not sure that's such a bad thing.
  • @reconzeroWeapon strength in apex isn’t balanced by the weapon type for most all guns in the game though, it’s balanced by tiered attachments. That way you can use the guns you enjoy playing most with there still being a tier system to their strength throughout the game. Given this fact, there is no point to tiering the weapons themselves, or else that’s just bad game balance. Each weapon should have its niche function. Mozambique is a shotgun with the quick handling of a pistol. R-301 is a well-rounded assault rifle useful in many situations. 30-30 is fast mid-range poking weapon that can double as a sniper when pacing shots. If a gun doesn’t have its niche then the game is out of balance. As such, that is the case for the P2020. It has no effective use compared to every other gun you’ll find on drop, or throughout the rest of the game. That’s why I argue to give it more function by making it stand out as a reliable sidearm like it would be in other shooter games. Read my above replies for further explanation

  • @reconzero I completely agree with you on the "hardcore looters and the lucky" lol. That is like 90% of this game. I drop in, find a p2020, enemy finds a PK, yeah whos gonna win? Its obvious.

But in terms of balancing the guns, I think they should be balanced based on class - IE: Pistols do great up close, have INSANE reload speed and handling speed. Have bullet damage drop off - no more sniping with a wingman. SMG: Great up close and close-mid range. AR: Decent up close, okay mid range, horrible long range (no more lasered by an R301 from across the map). Marksman: great mid range, great long range. Sniper: decent mid range, great long range.

Many times I get out gunned by guns that shouldn't even be capable of hitting me when I am using a sniper or marksman.

I think a great buff to the P2020 would be a 1s reload speed.

Agreed across the board, but this...

"Many times I get out gunned by guns that shouldn't even be capable of hitting me when I am using a sniper or marksman."

...I agree with a thousand times. I'm so sick of this happening. It's almost proof of aimbotting. There's no other explanation I can think of.

"Why should I be crippled by finding 3 P2020s on the ground when my enemies one building over all found the holy grail, the fountain of youth, and a fully functioning time machine?"

The question self-answers: because luck plays a role in looter/shooters. The question isn't "why they get good stuff and I get crap?" The question is why did you drop so close to an enemy squad that you're forced to engage with whatever you could scrounge in the first 15 seconds on the ground? If you don't want to lose because someone else got lucky, then don't put yourself in a position where their good luck can be leveraged against you. Drop cold. That simple. Hot dropping is a choice. If you do it then you're choosing to allow luck to decide your fate.

I can't imagine picking up a p2020. I drop it if I pick it up by accident. I would rather toss grenades than use the p2020.

They really just need to remove it from the sandbox, but I guess they feel that the sandbox needs a black sheep so everything else looks good in comparison.

Just don't pick it up... RUN!
