Caustic Gas Traps

Increasing Caustic's damage resistance and damage dealt with his traps has proved to make the character more balanced along with the other legends.  But I still think his traps lack the threat that they should pose.  First off, Caustic's character development is one of my favorites.  I'll play him if Pathfinder's chosen regardless of guaranteeing a lower chance of success.  That being said at times it feels like Caustic is the edgy kid from science class that's ego got a little too high because he'd made a model volcano... or something along those lines.

Really what I'm getting at is that I'd love for three things to be looked into.  One being the gas trap's ability to blind your own allies.  I'm sure many players and the developers see many issues with why this can be so problematic.  While it allows Nox Vision to be a perk it also makes the traps feel like a chaotic trap rather than be used as a team's helpful defense mechanism.  That brings me to my other biggest problem with them.  Their SIZE does not make them look like they're engineered to be traps.  This has been talked about in many posts.  If they're intended to be used as traps then why are they giant billboards that scream 'AVOID US'?  This forces players to hide them better but the large number of glassed doors, the small trigger radius, and their overall size makes hiding them extremely difficult.  I wouldn't consider myself a skilled player but can vouch that unless I'm in a panicked situation I very seldomly trigger a trap unintentionally.  I'd also argue that this makes Caustic's character feel like a wild card.  'Placing gas traps' is like the warning of 'this may turn into a chaotic mess when we're in a fire fight'.

Lastly the damage.  While useful when the trap's thrown into an enclosed area with an enemy (as long as you're not shot down during the deployment period), it isn't high enough for rare occasions when a player accidentally triggers it.  Increasing the damage would help make the traps more effective but make them overkill and infuriating for cases in which they're used as grenades.

My only thoughts on making them useful is to make their physical appearance smaller and color less vibrant (yellow and red are pretty bright).  Allowing allies to see through the gas defeats the purpose of Nox Vision and takes away from the trap aspect by making it more of a defense mechanism.  Also increasing the damage allows them to be misused as a close range weapon rather than their title 'Gas Trap'.  By making them smaller they can be hidden below the glass of doors, hidden around corners better, and overall increase the success rate of 'trapping' players.  Reducing the size of gas traps will make Caustic a far more useful and feared character.

  • I made a post proposing some changes that I think would help buff Caustic up to the same level as other legends, give it a read if you have some time.

As for this post, here's a couple points:

    1. Caustic Gas should still blind all players who are caught in it, including teammates. Changing this would also mean Bangalore's smoke would also need to be more see-through or there would be a shift in legend balance. The fact that teammates don't get slowed down nearly as much anymore is already a great change towards how gas effects teammates.
    2. The gas traps have a lot of gas in them - they'll be pretty big bois. Also, you don't want the gas traps to be smaller. As a Caustic main, I can even see that would be bad change which would just make Caustic more of an annoyance than he already is. My proposal was to simply make the traps harder to deactivate.
    3. The gas damage currently is in a fine state. 1 Gas Canister can deal 99 damage to a player - if they stay in the gas for the full 12 seconds. My proposal was just to make it more difficult to escape the gas by having the gas range slowly increase over time.
