Mouse & Keyboard cheating on console

More for the spotlight.

So, regardless of what people say and how they'd like to protest, every single match I join on PS4 now, I share it with M&K users. Those 20-kills-4k-damage guys who have laser beam accuracy from across the map using an R99, zero recoil with any gun, 3000mph pinpoint 360° aiming, fast strafing, etc. Y'know, those advantages they claim not to have.

So firstly: The most obvious point I'd like to make here is that it's against the ToS, i.e. Respawn do not condone it and have publicly said this, but still, nothing is getting done about it. If it isn't condoned, it means you're cheating.

But unfortunately there are much wider issues:

1) As people are using third party adapters for the M&K support, the adapter is also tricking the console into thinking it's accepting a standard controller input, and so it also gives strong, adjustable aim assist to M&K users. Do people realise what this means? It means these guys have the advantages of M&K aiming, WITH assisted aim. Almost every time I see someone using a Havoc from across the map, I'm like "Ah, another one eh?".

2) Player retention will plateau, and new players will turn away fast. I've introduced friends to Apex, who have all quit before they've even started because they're not so attuned to FPS gaming and find the game impossible to enjoy due to the immediate, constant deaths. We all practice, we all get better in time, but how do you explain to your casual friends that they will likely never be able to compete on this particular game because they are at a disadvantage from the beginning of every match due to blatant cheaters? They're spectating their deaths and asking how the guy that killed them had zero recoil using a heavy recoil gun. What do you tell them? "No idea man, guess you've gotta just git gud". Nope. It shouldn't be happening. We should be applauding people who killed us, not perpetually watching them using a mouse and keyboard to annihilate less skilled players.

3) Gamers are very toxic these days, and it's because they're overly competitive and will do anything to win, whilst getting some weird gratification from putting others down anonymously on the Internet, and claiming you're only dying because you're bad at the game, etc.. This is problematic for many reasons. Not least because it makes you a * human being, but because it keeps shrouding the fact that this cheating 100% exists, is 1000% a bigger wider issue than they care to believe, and assume that "because it doesn't happen to them, it doesn't happen at all". All of these factors combine to give the illusion that it's not as big an issue as it really is, which inadvertently means less will get done about it. YOU may not notice it, and that's fine, but I DO. It may not affect your enjoyment, and that's fine too, but it affects MINE, and tonnes of other players, whether they realise it or not.

4) The report feature is still missing over a year after its removal for "tweaking". What's sadder, is that there was never a guarantee as to how effective it ever was. But at least we had the option to try and police the game to make it fairer and more enjoyable for the MAJORITY, not for all the try hards with their heirlooms and laser beam accuracy, making umpteen smurf accounts to get 30 kills per game vs all the new and unskilled players. I mean how horrific does your personality have to be, to create new accounts in order to get more damage and kills by abusing and exploiting the SBMM system? Is it not bad enough that you use a mouse and keyboard and deny it, giggling in your mum's basement with your pants around your ankles?

I know a lot of you already know about all this, which is why you're all secretly using it and vehemently denying it, and why my HDD is filling up more by the day with clips I've saved of blatant cheating and aiming/recoil exploitation. But for those players who aren't aware and just assume they're not very skilled at the game or consider quitting etc, this is for you. You don't suck at the game, you're just getting killed repeatedly by no-lifers, try hards, and people with psychological complexes so strong that they have to gain unfair advantages on console to feel validated in life or remotely good at the game - That's the hard truth of it all.

To EA: Do us all a favour and pass the message on, it really has to stop.

To Respawn: As above. It's a bigger problem than even you guys probably know. I need a solution because my enjoyment in this game (along with tonnes of others) is now being utterly sucked dry with every death and every new clip saved to my HDD of blatant cheating.

To the cheaters: Why can't you bring your pitiful selves to the same playing field and just get better at using a controller like the rest of us eh? If you want to use a M&K, why not just get back on your PC and stop exploiting every unfair advantage to make you feel good about yourselves on console? Or is it because you feel like a big fish in a small pond here, and would otherwise get stomped over on PC? How ironic it is, that you don't enjoy that feeling, but have no issue inflicting it upon others.

To anyone else that read this entire post: Sorry about that.

@Midnight9746 There's a reason for this. Controllers on PC get given aim assist whereas their M&K counterparts don't, and similarly on console, M&K get given aim assist as well as their more accurate aiming and fluid control of movement and utilities.

In short, both are given advantages but only when used on their opposing intended console. Hence the sheer volume of those abusing it.

If there came a day where the playing field was evened out, the game would be as enjoyable, intense, varied and fun as it used to be. When Apex was first released, for a few months, I'd never played anything more fun and challenging, the mechanics are superb. Slowly over time, people found ways to manipulate the game and their own advantages, and now it's become a cult. It's become an "us vs them", only we're at the disadvantage all the time.

Sometimes I feel like if Respawn aren't willing (or perhaps able) to do anything about the fact that everyone is abusing no recoil mods, that they should just take recoil away from guns and see how the rest of us perform. I don't mean to sound egotistical here, but if my guns had zero recoil, I think I'd be a pretty formidable force too. It'd be nice to enter fights with the same brazen confidence as the cheaters for a change, instead of always having to bait and hide for fear of being sniped by a fuggin' SMG.
  • This is why I will never ever take any kind of 'Competitive' or 'Ranked' play over the internet too seriously.  Because if you think its that serious, you're basically just a sucker for marketing.

If you want real competition, you don't get a custom rig.  That's why in real tournaments, they are played over a LAN and you don't get to bring your own computer.  Same with any for real competitive sport...sure for example in NASCAR, it's all about 'cheating'.  But there are still rules that have to be followed.  That's why you can't bring a Formula car to the track.

One day people might get this but I doubt it.  If you want to achieve a Predator rank, you better not only be a good player, but you better cut every single unmonitored angle you can that EA can't detect or do anything about.  And if you dig that, go for it.

Me, I'm just not going to take your or my rank all that seriously.  Because the game doesn't.  When it does, I will.

  • @Midnight9746 Well, cheating is cheating.
Even though I use PC, and aim assist on PC is what I personally want to see removed, I will fully support posts of people complaining about mouse/keyboard cheaters on console. We're fighting for a similar goal, and the more attention we get, the better the chance at Respawn fixing these cheating issues.
