Looting. Positioning. Evaluating squadmates. Listening to their inane banter. A mid-match engagement is acceptable if it doesn't go on too long or compromise the larger strategy, but even at that point in the game I would say that engagement offers a lot to lose and very little to gain. If I'm gonna to give someone the chance to take my head off then there'd better be a worthwhile potential reward. Like a win.

And there is one the biggest problems with ranks in a nutshell. People actually care about them.
