Suggestion: Tournament / Cup mode

Hello Respawn team and community,

This post proposes an ALGS-inspired “soft” tournament mode for Apex Legends: a structured competitive format designed to sit between Ranked and professional ALGS play. The intent is to introduce a ruleset that changes player incentives and produces more strategic, end-game-focused matches.

Format Overview

Solo, Duo, or Trio queue
If entering as Solo or Duo, players are matched once and remain with the same teammate(s) for the entire tournament

  • 3–5 matches per tournament
  • Fixed lobby (same teams across all games)
  • Cumulative leaderboard
  • Placement and kill points are aggregated across matches
  • Winner determined by total points after the final game
  • Competitive scoring model (placement-weighted, optional kill cap)
  • Optional / rotating Legend bans
  • Estimated duration: ~1.5–2.5 hours

Incentive Structure & Player Behavior
A cumulative, multi-match scoring system materially alters decision-making:

  • Performance persists across games, increasing the cost of early eliminations
  • Consistency, rotations, and late-game positioning are prioritized over isolated high-risk engagements
  • Teams are incentivized to manage risk across the full tournament rather than optimize for a single match

This closely mirrors ALGS-style strategic play, where disciplined mid-games and dense end circles emerge naturally from the incentive structure. Compared to standard Ranked—where risk is often localized to a single game—this format introduces longer-term stakes that encourage more deliberate play.

Competitive Integrity & Commitment
Because this mode involves fixed teams and extended duration:

  • Leaving, going AFK, or abandoning the tournament should result in a 1-hour requeue penalty
  • This penalty is proportionate to the time investment and helps preserve lobby stability
  • Stronger enforcement reduces negative externalities for remaining teams

Social & Spectator Elements

  • Playing multiple matches against the same teams enables adaptation, learning, and longer-term rivalries
  • Eliminated teams may spectate ongoing matches
  • Optional chat between eliminated teams while spectating:
    • Enables light banter and post-fight discussion
    • Allows teams to discuss ongoing games, previous interactions, and key moments
    • Helps create shared context and tournament “narratives” across matches

Ranked Progression Integration
To ensure the mode complements Ranked rather than competes with it:

  • Award Ranked Points (RP) based on overall tournament placement
  • RP scaling can account for match count and lobby strength
  • Maintains progression relevance for competitive players so they don’t feel they are losing out on regular ranked grind

Summary
An ALGS-soft tournament mode would:

  • Offer a higher-stakes competitive environment without requiring esports-level commitment
  • Encourage strategic, consistency-based play
  • Produce more competitive end circles and higher-quality late games
  • Expand Apex’s competitive ecosystem alongside Ranked

  • I didn’t initially realize that it’s already possible for anyone to participate in ALGS through the Open Qualifiers, which does allow players to experience tournament-style games — although typically only for a short period, since most teams are eliminated early.

Because of that, a mode like this could serve as a more accessible and repeatable practice environment for teams interested in ALGS-style competition. It could also help familiarize the broader player base with how ALGS is normally played, in terms of pacing, decision-making, and end-game setups. As a longer-term possibility, strong performance in this mode could even be explored as a way to qualify teams beyond the Open Qualifiers.

At the very least, it could increase overall awareness of ALGS and better connect everyday play with the competitive ecosystem.

  • On a extra note:
I played a lot of ranked during the weekend and reached plat 4 as solo. At the start of most matches I write to my team mates "I perfer to rotate and play position". One of the matches one of my random team mates said: "Who cares, this is only platinum" or something like that.

And this is the general feeling I get from most ranked games. If we are holding down a spot other teams are just gunghoeing in and they just dont simply seem to care if they win the fight or not. I guess RP from kills etc. outweights getting top 8 its more efficient to take the risk and just que up for a new game?

This also gives no real ALGS sense of playstyle in ranked.

  • Ok. Last night me and two friends played in a community hosted tournament. It was hosted by Atomsphere, go check them out.

It was really fun to participate. They live streamed the event. Tho the hosts had to spend alot of time filling in the scoreboard in google forms but it also seemed like they used a webservice on a tournament site (apexlegendstatus.com).

This manually handling of the scoreboard between the fights could have been done automaticlly ingame, making the wait between the rounds shorter.

I will edit main post also. *I cant edit main post lol

  • Little update from me:

I have now signed up for the ALGS season 6 Open qualifier. I think it's pretty crazy that anyone who wants can participate, but its almost no markeding about it ingame or anything? If I were not specially interested I would never known I as a average diamond player could try and play.

The Open qualifier part 1 is split into 4 weekends in a row.

This weekend now is closed, but to put in perspective, this is the amount of teams just for this weekend:
    Americas: 520 teams
APAC North (Asia-Pacific North): 301 teams
APAC South (Asia-Pacific South): 318 teams
EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa): 321 teams

So clearly still quite popular in the community! 1460 teams and 4380 players signed up!
