Terrible servers this split

I usually dont complain but this split, the server performance has been just terrible, especially in ranked match servers.  I am playing on the Amsterdam data center (18ms) and usually have around 25 ping when playing pubs and in 2/10 ranked games I also have a stable 20-25 ping and the game usually runs smoothly without problems. But in the remaining 8/10 ranked games, I start the match with 50-60 ping that rapidly is fluctuating +/- 2-3 ms.. And its not the 50 ping that is the problem since 50 ping still is quite low. But whenever I get these 50+ ping lobbies, I KNOW that the game will perform really badly. Stuttering, mini-freezes, dead-slides, teleporting enemies, sluggish-feeling mouse/crosshair etc

But whats strange is that the ping gradually goes down as the player number goes down. When its 15ish players left, I usually are down at 30 ping and the game performs better and when its the final circle, I am usually at my "ordinary" 25ish ping and the game runs smoothly as it does it pubs.

So it seems to me that Respawn did some kind of "optimization" that maybe made it better for some players ( perhaps high ping players, playing on toasters on the neighbors stolen WIFI?) but definitely made it worse for me. This seems to be how Respawn operates. Just take the shoot behind corners-effect that is 100% a conscious design choice by Respawn. If you havent read the article, they pretty much explained that instead of making the game really good for people with low ping and really bad for people with high ping, they made it "semi-bad" for everyone =)

  • @Balladalidila I'm surprised they don't lag low ping players to put them on the same speed as the high ping players, or prevent the really high ping players from connecting to matches, and pair them in games with other high ping players.

I read somewhere that the devs wanted to make everyone’s experience as equal as possible. Someone with low ping might receive damage behind cover to accommodate someone with higher ping. It splits the difference essentially. That’s a really quick and poor explanation, but you get the idea.

I absolutely disagree with this mentality. It should be based around a realistic number, like 50 ping. After that you should get less and less lag compensation. If you have 100+ ping you should be at a disadvantage.

I notice the later it gets, the further away players must be that I’m playing against. As soon as I take any damage, it’s like I receive all of it at once. It was called super bullets in BF4. You get all the damage on a single tick.

Overall the game can feel very inconsistent. When things are registering how you think they should be, it’s amazing. Late at night, soon as I take any damage I have to back off immediately or risk being one clipped in a second.

Here’s a link talking about the net code. There’s an explanation about Low vs High ping scenario if you scroll down.

  • @Balladalidilacheck the IP of that server and ill bet its that one stupid UK instance thats broken since months. i complained about this in the past, why does it boost me to UK when i choose a continental mainserver ? was much worse in the past when you even got send to the US while being connected to Europe Master Servers.
