Apex: a guide to etequette

Today we'll discuss the do's and don'ts when in a game of apex. From proper ping usage, to solo dropping, to leaving a teammates banner in the storm. Study these tips well and your success rate is all but guaranteed to increase.

1. Ping spam- the two most common pings "lets go this way" and "enemy here" are very useful but are not needed to be overly used. Suggest a direction and move in. A maximum of two pings for an enemy is sufficient for grabbing teammates attention.

2.pinging in a fight- in the situation of a fight that is quickly turning to the other teams favor or a third party arrives and a teammate recognizes that you need to retreat or at least back up a bit it is in your best interest to bug out. Dont not be stubborn and continue fighting when your teammates run to heal.

3. Dropping in the same house- when dropping unless it is a building large enough to facilitated enough loot for two or all squad members, do not land in the same building, or take every bit of loot you see. Especially if a squad mate specifically pings "I'm going here." At the very least leave them a gun and ammo, otherwise the team is hurting with less means of attack and defense.

4. Solo dropping- lets get one thing clear most of you are not an top 500 apex predator TTV (insert edgy name with x's on the end here). Your not going to one v three every team you see. Your not going to perform a miracle because you say so. You are going to need your team to survive, coordinate, and rise in the ranks and improve your skill.

5. Loot goblins- it's fine to gobble up you need to get by but dont deprive your teammates of everything. If they dibs something first let have it, if theyr low on health and someone drops a med kit when you have six of them, dont take it.

6. Picking a legend- if someone picks your main dont throw a fit and leave, try a different character. Try getting good with other legends and master them to widen your skillset. Otherwise your not gunna have a lot of fun.

7. Rezing and retrieving banners- unless there is absolutely, 100%, without a doubt that you cant retrieve a banner or rez your squad mate, it will benefit you to at least try at some point. Ignoring it when it's 2 feet in the storm will not help. Especially when they've made the effort to keep you alive and in the game.

8. Coms- control your temper and language, it's a game.

9. Post thirst looting- if your squad mate is thirsted after a fight and there's no immediate threat dont loot their items. It reinforces negative thoughts from one teammate to another.

10. Maintain positive thoughts, coms, and energy throughout the squad and game.

Bonus: three things that need fixing most

1. Lag- it's gotten so bad I can barely play without getting bounced around.

2. Cheaters- this is mostly for PC players but still it's an issue

3. SBMM- even with cross play beta in I'm still comming across a fair bit of predators.

Remember everyone be excellent to each other!.

I'm finding it really hard to not be an azz back to team mates. But sometimes I go out of my way to do so.

Just doing my part to weed out those players.
  • Just to expand on number 8:

-Tone is important. I'll frequently get teammates who have mics but don't use them, and their first use of the mic is to be angry, aggressive, passive aggressive, depressive, etc. etc, even when asking for something. I'll often get teammates who need something, and using their mic they'll go, "Gee! Wish I had X." and then that's it. Or if they want me to slow down and wait for them, they'll go, "Hey can you slow the f*** down?". At that point, I'm under no obligation to help you out or slow down, because you couldn't even be bothered to have common courtesy when you needed something. You get back what you put out, and if you're angry or passive aggressive upon first talking to complete strangers, what makes you think they're obligated to be nice to you, when you couldn't even do the same?

-You need something? Be explicit with quantity. Coordinated teams always share with each other, but they often first ask how much of X that the other needs. No one wants to be caught with their pants down needing something and not having it. On top of this, for the most part you're playing with strangers who don't communicate, so being explicit with what you need and what you have gives you a better chance of getting more of what you need. I have no mic, but typing in chat with what I have vs. what I need always gets me some more of what I'm asking for. After all it's the same situation no matter who you play with when someone asks for something. That question of, "Do they NEED need more of X? Or do they have some but want more?"

-You've got a mic, don't use it, and then when you die you start complaining about the situation and or your teammates? Simple solution, voice your opinion using the mic you bought. You've got 0 right to complain about anything if you've got the means to say, "Hey I think this situation isn't looking so hot, let's dip out." or, "This isn't going well, I don't have anything, let's book it." and then you just, don't. Use your mic constructively, or keep your mouth shut. No one wants to hear you complaining when you couldn't even be bothered to try and help yourself and your team to victory through callouts.

-Speaking of callouts, CALLOUT FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. There's no worse feeling than losing because your teammate who has a mic ran off to heal but just didn't bother to tell anyone leaving you to fight however many people are left. If you're healing, call out you're healing. If you're looting in combat, call out that you're looting in combat. If you want to push an enemy, or you don't want to, CALL OUT THAT YOU DO OR DON'T WANT TO GO. Frequently, I've been up and ditched by teammates who have mics but just never use them who run away from fights while I push them, who then watch me die and speak into the mic, "Why'd you go I didn't have anything / I didn't want to fight that / I was worried about ring / etc. etc. etc." How was I supposed to know? I can't read your mind, and any other player you queue with most likely can't either. Talk into the mic, let people know what's up what you're thinking what you're doing, etc. etc.

I'm no shining paragon of non-toxicity, but I've gotten way too many teammates who don't use their mic for ANYTHING except to complain. If you have a mic, use it to help your team, not be a whiny little pissant looking for an excuse to complain.

Use the ping to decide :

    1. I see enemy :

              - If I don't want to attack, I use "Watching over there", follow by "Defending here".

              - If I want to attack : Ping enemy, wait acknowledgement, then "Attacking over there" and see if they following/responding.

    2. Team mate ping enemy:

              - If I don't want to attack, I use "Defending here".

              - If I want to attack : acknowledgement, then "Attacking over there".

  • Now although I agree with literally every point here.

Let's be perfectly honest , there is no apex etiquette.

Take ping spamming for instance, deeply disruptive and completely unhelpful yet its something I experience in maybe 90% of my matches, usually right after the offenders in question have doe something which can only be described as wholesale stupidity.

A number of us have requested a small cooldown on pings but respawn have no interest in implementing it lol. ☹️
