How do we still not have skill-based matchmaking almost a year into launch?

Yeah I already know this is gonna sound like a whinge post, but gotta get it off my chest.  I play the game for maybe half an hour after work each day as a way to de-stress.  I've been playing off-and-on since May of this year.  Started off as crap, only wins from carries but about two weeks into it I was knocking squads and actually feeling like I'm of use to my squad.  Come October or so, I've noticed getting matched with lvl 200+ with over 1k kills fairly regularly.  I'm lvl 45 with 280 kills on my main (Wattson) and starting to lose confidence with the game even though I practice near daily.  Rainbow Six has the gold standard of tier-based matchmaking and I'm wondering why it still hasn't been implemented here as a way for (frankly) n00bs like myself to avoid the TTV tryhards.

  • @n1xon99 Well, if player A lands in the same area as player B while being aware that they have the same high skill, he's doing it WITH the RNG in mind, aka gambling 🙂. Highly skilled players have looting stratagems, always considering a way out if "Mozambique here". This is why Apex is more interesting and complex than COD.

@n1xon99 SBMM is not the issue with what you’re saying. Even if that happens without SBMM you’re more than likely dead unless they are extremely noob and can’t hit the aide of a barn. The one area I would agree SBMM makes this situation more difficult is running. The players in higher skill lobbies won’t let you run. They will pursue you when you try to run and they are typically more difficult to get away from.

Unfortunately this is part of BR games. That is why it’s important to pay attention to who’s dropping around you and where they are going. You can still go to the same places they land, but you’re taking a risk.

SBMM is definitely harder, but I don’t think it’s as bad as people claim. I played almost exclusively with my higher skill diamond friend last night. His lobbies are definitely harder than mine. But it’s not as bad as people complain.. i just don’t post 1700+ damage games. I also have to stick close to my squad play more supportive and less aggressively. My skill level puts me on the low end of platinum.

@DoYaSeeMe The arguement isn't about how much SBMM impacts the initial drop, it was if it did at all. My point is that it adds another layer of RNG which can be frustrating, not that one issue ruins the game. Also you can't always just land somewhere else because you aren't always in control. So you can land away from your team and die because your solo or stick with your team to fight for weapons. Yes, Apex is more complex than COD and that's why SBMM impacts the game more.

@n1xon99 I think it really subjective on where you land as to how close you can stick with your squad. Some areas are better suited for it than others. Some areas sort of require hitting different buildings (overlook comes to mind).

There are benefits and risks too landing in the same building or not. If you all land in the same multi-level building everyone will probably have one gun and enough ammo for 1 fight. That said, not everyone is going to have armor. The risk of getting picked off one by one is lower, how ever.. If the enemy team each take one building, they are going to all have armor and be better looted overall.

If you each take one building, the risk of getting picked off one by one is higher. But you'll all be better looted overall. Which will put your squad in a better position to fight the other squad.

It's really a pick your poison situation.

@DarthValtrex I'm well aware of how to effectively drop. My point is that SBMM makes this process harder and more stressful. This combined with the other issues of SBMM makes the game less enjoyable.
  • Well I am sorry to say, but for me SBMM has changed the game from unplayable and not enjoyable to fun and success!

While I got 1-3 wins per week in season 1, I can now get 1-3 wins per evening!

I am not longer paired against all those monster pro players and can have a fair match with players on my level!

    From a winrate of 3.9% I raised to 6.1%.

My K/D has increased from 0.6 to 0.8!

Thanks EA, for me this is a great step forward!

@Flashshark1980It’s been the same for me unless I’m playing with my high rank friends.

this notion that ranked is where to go.. ranked is now really hard for me.

  • Yeah but in ranked there are less leavers...

I like to play ranked to get a serious team and not those battlefield adrenaline junkys!

  • I personally don't see it. I've been playing ranked for about 5 weeks straight and I have to tell you pubs is a blessing. I'm on PS4 if that helps. I can admit running into preds and diamonds in pubs can be frustrating but the Diamond players in ranked have to deal with Preds so I'm not seeing the complaint people are talking about. There just aren't enough people on at all times to give everyone in the Apex universe to get afair game. When or if they put crossplay it will hopefully solve this
