I usually ask everyone if they're ready to fight once I'm fully geared up. If they're rocking level 1 armor I'm hoping they try to avoid fights unless they have to until they get level 2+ armor first. If one player goes off the rails to fight another team I'll back them up though hoping for the best.

I agree with you, communicating your play is the best you can do. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not but overall it's better than staying silent and making them guess your intentions. I do something similar. Fist and foremost I correct them if they attempt to engage without everyone together and without the basic helm/armor and one weapon. Run and loot a bit more before that first fight if you are not ready as a team, meaning you have at least all of those items on everyone...does not take long to acquire the loot and about-face back to the fight. I also voice my opinion on when to engage, retreat, rotate, etc...they often don't listen, some just have to learn from bad choices, but occasionally they do listen OR they offer better advice! Love it when I get those mates. If anything opening dialog will help you learn from others.

This is so true. There's been many times I've made call outs and I know the team is listening, they just don't want to talk (which is fine). So keep on doing it and take on the leadership role of your squad. It might feel weird talking to yourself for a bit, unless you finally realize they have their own agenda. I guess that's when you might want to go silent too.
