Yes you can play how you want to but if you want to win it is generally around active plays either by quick rotations to have better placements or killing squads. The more you want to win, the more restricted on how you want to play because it’s directed by the current meta like you have to have a Seer and a Valk in your team. But for the general audience/players, do what you want to do.
On a personal level, my friends and I play aggressively. If we see you playing very cautiously by hiding or just sniping, you’re getting aped immediately. Apex feels the best when it’s fast paced. Can’t really hide in this game anymore because of the scan meta.
See, your assessment of how you need to play is correct, but it makes me sad.
In my ideal alternate universe, where we have UBI, Single Payer Health Care, Unions for every profession, Gay Couples protecting their "plants" with AR-15s, commercials on streaming is illegal, and less processed food, this is the version of Apex we could play:
- The matchmaking is perfect. Every fight is close, even if you lose, and the wins or losses never feel cheap. Everyone feels like their time in the game is respected.
- Scan meta is greatly reduced. Bloodhound can still track, but doesn't have the insta-radar anymore. His tactical is now sending his bird to attack you real quick, do light damage, and steal one item at random from your bag. Seer only has the exhibit. His passive is now just knowing that enemies are within 30 meters (hearbeats) but no idea which way and his tactical no longer marks enemies (but does more damage in return). Valk no longer scans beacons or on drop, she's just an attacker like she always should have been. Ash remembered she was a titan pilot and instead of her deathbox passive she remembered how to use her mobility pack and can double jump and wall run now.
- Mirage finally figured out a way to go invisible without him or one of his team being downed.
- Evo shields no longer upgrade (50 max) but they recharge when not taking damage for a bit like in Gun Run. As such, no more batteries.
- "What about the Sentinel!?" you might be thinking, and here is the key, no gimmick guns need special parts to work anymore. Sentinel is always charged, Havoc and Devotion always have Turbocharger, the pistols come with Hammerpoints. The Rampage is gone (because in that world I can't see a way to balance it and I don't want to hear any whining in this alternate universe).
- Guns start with all white attachments. Anything you manage to find is an upgrade.
- Oh, yeah, speaking of finding things, there is a LOT LESS to find. Less medical, less ammo, less attachment upgrades. If you are lucky you will find 100 light ammo total. Less for bigger ammo types.
- The ring is even more aggressive. Plan your rotations well and quickly. Speaking of...
- There are 4 drop-ships now, all with different paths. The squads are spread out among them, and you can't drop till you get a green light, where you have a 5 second window to pick the direction before they just kick you out of the ship. This keeps everyone from all hotdropping in...
- Oh yeah, Fragments is gone too. Streamers have to find fights to keep people interested rather than camp a spot they spent 15 seasons tricking kids into jumping into so they can stream easier.
- So, in short, the game has less resources, less easy ways to survive, but it requires you to be a little aggressive, finish people off quick to re-supply, before someone does the same to you. It's a Sci-fi Survival Horror.
Ah, if a boy could dream...
